When one gets a lens error it usually means there is a physical lockup of the gears inside. It may need to be repaired by Nikon.com, if repair is economical to the owner of the camera.

Bump the camera hard against the palm of your hand, or something harder if you dare. The lens is likely stuck. My Panasonic did the same thing. Knocked it a few times on the side of the counter and the lens popped out. Wiped it clean and it's worked fine ever since.

I think I answered this one earlier. Is the lens stuck? If so, help it out with a little screw driver. Worked for me!
