My touch pad not working probably .

Adel Heider,

You may want to first download the driver and install it into the system from the link below.

Erratic Pointer Movement

Here are some easy steps to take to determine the problem with a touch pad demonstrating erratic pointer movement:
  1. Get the latest driver from support.dell.com - Most problems can be corrected with a simple driver download. This should always be one of the first steps when diagnosing any touch pad problem.
  2. Check for hand and finger placement - The most common cause of random pointer movement is that the touch pad senses a finger or part of the hand near the surface of the device.
    • Have the customer attempt to use the touch pad normally but to pay attention to the location of his or her hands and fingers. Are any straying too close to the touch pad?
    • Adjust the Touch Sensitivity and TouchCheck settings in the Touch Pad Settings section of the Dell Touchpad Properties.
  3. Try an external mouse - Does this problem happen with an external mouse attached?
    • The Device Select section of the Dell Touchpad Properties has options to enable or disable the touch pad or external mouse. Try several combinations of these settings.
    • If the problems only occur when the touch pad is enabled and do not occur any time a mouse or other external device is used, then the issue is related to the touch pad.
  4. Check for mechanical problems - If the problem cannot be corrected by adjusting the settings mentioned above and only occurs with the touch pad enabled, then this could indicate a mechanical problem.
    • Press down on the palm rest on first the left side of the touch pad and then the right. See if the cursor starts moving on its own.
    • Run Dell 32-bit Diagnostics and try to recreate the problems there. If either of these situations occur, then replace the palm rest.

No Pointer Movement

No pointer movement from the touch pad (or track stick, if available) usually is the result of one of two things: The touch pad has been disabled in the driver interface, or the touch pad cable is damaged or disconnected. Follow the steps below to determine the problem.
  1. Connect an external mouse - In either situation, an external mouse should still function. If it does not, try booting into Safe Mode and testing both devices again.
  2. Enable the touch pad in the driver settings - Using the external mouse (or key strokes if no mouse is available), go into the Dell Touchpad Properties. Go to the Device Select section and enable the touch pad. If already enabled, get the latest driver from support.dell.com.
  3. Test the device in Dell 32-bit Diagnostics - To eliminate a potential software problem, run the Dell 32-bit Diagnostics and test the device here.
  4. Check for mechanical problems - As a last resort, press down on the palm rest where the touch pad connector is located on the system board. If the pointer reacts in some way, then the cable may just need to be reseated. Otherwise, replace the palm rest.

Thank You,

My daughter has a dell laptop. the mouse is not working. she wasn't able to right click now she can't use it at all. she feels she might have disabled it.

Hi, most probably you are refering to the built-in touch pad on the laptop, because a mouse is actually an external device, which can also be used on a laptop. But, I am presuming that you are refering to the touchpad, rather than a mouse, since it is a laptop.
There are 2 possibilities :-
1) there my be a hardware failure, as far as the touchpad component is concerned. And how do you find this out ?
Is your duaghter's Dell Laptop still covered under Hardware Warranty from Dell ? If yes, then call Dell Hardware Technical Support 1-800-624-9896 (24/7) , (I am presuming that you are in the US) and they would diagnose (at no charge) whether there is any hardware failure with the laptop's touchpad component. If there is, then Dell would send you a technician and get it replaced.
If your daughter's Dell laptop does NOT have a Hardware Warranty, then Dell Dell Hardware Technical Support would charge you US$ 59.00 as a diagnostics fee, to provide phone support, in order to diagnose if the touchpad is defective or not.
Incase your daughter's Dell laptop does NOT have a Hardware Warranty, then try what is mentioned in point # 2 below, before you spend US$ 59.00 as a diagnostics fee.
2) The second and most likely reason for the issue is that the settings for the touchpad have been changed. You can get the settings corrected using the Dell Touchpad Utility. If you are using vista or windows 7, just type in " Dell Touchpad Utility " in the start search option, by clicking on the windows start logo on the left side of the taskbar, open the Dell Touchpad Utility, and correct the settings, for example, right click may be disabled, etc.
You may even re-install the driver for the touchpad, by going to www.support.dell.com, click on support for home users, Drivers and Downloads, then enter either the service tag of the Dell Laptop or select the model, you will get a concise list of drivers for your specific product model : from there, download & re-install the touchpad;s driver listed in Input Device Drivers, after which reboot the laptop and the issue most probably should get resolved.
It would have been nice to know the exact model of the Dell Laptop and the Operating System that is running on it.
But, please do try the above and I hope the issue gets resolved.

Touchpad on my 8200 insprion stop working

Try to test it using 32 bit diagnostic

tap F12 (just after Dell Splash Screen)
select Diagnostic partition
wait for test to finish
select Custom test (may need to use TAB and ENTER)
select pointing device

if it work here, it is likely a driver issues - got to support.dell.com and download latest pointer drivers (Alps under Input Devices?) You may as well do this first since it is easier than testing see http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&cs=22&l=en&s=dfh&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid=&SystemID=INS_PNT_P4_8200

If it does not work her, you'll need to pop it open and see if cables are tight, if they are the touchpad is broken and you'll need a replacement palmrest (included the palmrest)

see the manual at support.dell.com for info on disassembling your model if required.

Touchpad

Hi Ayubehenzo,
You will need to run 32 bit dell diag's.
You would need start the pc and the tap F12 button on the Dell Logo. Select the last option diagnostics. On the option where it says that were color bars displayed type "N" once the tests are done press "N" where it says do you wanna continue the remaining memory tests. Once this is done you will get a message loading dell diagnostic utility partition. you will now need to choose the custom test and then need to run a test on the touchpad. If this still doesnt resolve your issue you will need to call Dell Technical Support.

Dell Inspiron 6000 Alps Touchpad not working

Try unistalling the touchpad driver, and reboot. The machine will find the touchpad and reinstall the driver automatically. These have a tenancy to glitch when using an external mouse, and this should clear it up. Let me know.

Look for a driver on dell... if that doesnt work then get a new touchpad or send it back to dell and tell them to shove it.
