Hey,
Check out for any loose cables or burned fuse(s) at the back or by opening your ps3 module . If this is not the case then check whether any coil inside your ps3 is shortcircuited. Also check out for any heat sink(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heat_sink) disconnection . Hope it might resolve your problem

Thankyou

HAHA man smoke?? seriously?
Ok well, the main problem is most likely that your ps3 had a power surge and the motherboard is probably fried. That popping noise are caps and mofsets exploding. The only thing I could think of for you is to well, somehow get a ps3 motherboard and replace it yourself if you have the stuff to. You could probably buy some off of ebay.
The only other way I could see it maybe working again is to hook it up to something else, or replace it's power supply. That might work (if your lucky and the power supply only got fried and not the motherboard, it will be cheaper for sure).
Sorry to say that this isn't 'that' much help from what you probably already know, I would suggest also if you decided to go the easy route and just buy a new ps3 (ebay would work for that too :) ) that you take the hard drive out at least so you can swap it into the new one.

Hope this helps...be sure to rate! Have a pleasant day in Iraq! :)
Myke.

It sounds like the power converter has burnt out (the smoke) in back inside of unit and will need replaced...Go to www.sony.com customer service and set up a return to fix! this is somthing you will not be able to do if your not a pro

Sounds like the transformer inside of it blew.  Which unfortunatly sony will not repair for you.  I would recommend looking on ebay to see if there is another PS3 that is not working that you could scrap for parts.

PS3 PSU board inside the unit had blown. If you have a technician in there, ask him to check the power board capacitor.

If problem is confined to power board, this should be a not too difficult fix.

Though the ps3 80g is backwards compatible,it does not play back all ps2 games. go to sony's website,i believe they have a list of games that are,and are not compatible.also make sure your ps3 has all the latest software updates.if you have it hooked to the internet im sure it does
