On your machine's needle bar, there should be a thumb screw on the right. Insert your needle with the flat side facing left.

I found a discussion that may help you since these machines run very differently than say a singer. The hand wheel for instance is turning away from the user (clockwise) instead of anti-clockwise.

Here's the link. Read the posts with the name djhinca.

Good luck

Why does the stitch length adjustment wheel turn itself and stitch lengths changes within short time while sewing on DURKOPP ADLER 867 industrial sewing machine?

maybe it is not locking into place as it should most machines will lock the setting into place to prevent any changes taking place while stitching , next time you run the machine try to keep a eye on the button ,leaver or whatever changes the stitch size to make sure it does not disengage while using the machine , if it does ,you might have to use some tape or rubber ban to hole it from moving as a short term fix

I have long loopy stitches on the bottom of my material and perfect ones on the top.

clean the machine of lint I use canned air
change the nedle it may be bent or burred
if this doesn't fix then you should take out the bobbin and clean the holder where the bobbin fits in as there maybe some lint or broken piece ofneedle there. if this doesn't work make sure you note the positions of the tension and then adjust one incrument at a time and try it and adjust and try good luck
