You are experiencing with your driver so for quick resolve through this following idea.
I assume, you have recovery disk ( it comes along with when while buying laptop)

if you have then
insert your disk in DVD/cd drive
then Go to
Start>run
then type in "SFC /SCANNOW" (there is space between "sfc and /) without quotes and hit enter.
it will take couple of minutes to complete all restore procedure of OS settings.
once you are done with it just rebood your Laptop then you should be good to go.
Note: Doing factory restore setting, nothing will be changed (personal files, folders etc) it just resets back all OS setting as it was in new.
it it does not solve your problem out then please post back so we can do next treatment for it.

Thank you,

Hi
You can turn on the touch pointer when you need it and turn it off when you don't. For example, you can turn on the touch pointer to tap the Close button on a window and turn it off to browse through e-mail messages.

Touch input is a feature that enables
the computer screen to respond to the touch of your finger. If touch input is
available on your computer, you can use your finger to do many of the things
that you do with a mouse or a tablet
pen. For example, you can move the pointer on the screen, select objects,
    and open files and folders.

To determine if touch input is available on your
    computer

    • Tap to
      open Pen and Input Devices.

If the Touch tab appears, touch input is
      available on your computer.

hold Fn key and press F7, if that does not work hold windows key and press F7, if that does not work plug in a usb keyboard .

You might try a bios download from Dell's support site, and check the connection, sometimes atouchpad connection will get a little dirt or corrosion build up or just work itself out a bit. If the bios flash doesn't and the connection is good, then I'm afraid you may need to replace the touchpad.

A bios flash and a system repair will reset the registry. I would try both of these and see where it gets you.

Hi,
Touchpad not Working Properly
On some Dell laptop systems may the touchpad not work.
It was documented that this may be solved by draining the flea power.

» Drain the Flea Power From Dell Laptop

  1. Power the system down.

  2. Remove all external devices and disconnect AC adapter power cable from the system if applicable.

  3. Remove the battery from the system.

  4. Hold down the power button continuously for at least 5 seconds.
Do not release the power button during this process.

  5. Insert the battery back to the system.

  6. Power the system on.

Thanks
Proton

Touchpad not working

There's a tiny orange light near the upper left corner of the touchpad to the left of the touchpad. If that is lit, you may only have to tap the upper left hand corner of the touchpad a couple of times to get it to go out. and start the touchpad working.

Barring that, see if the synaptics driver is installed. Go to "Control Panel," change the "view" in the upper right hand corner to "large icons," and see if "Synaptics Touchpad V8.1" is listed.

If not, go to "Control Panel," locate device manager and click (with a usb mouse) "mice and other pointing devices," click "Synaptics PS/2 Port Touchpad," and check to see if it says, "device is working properly." If not or if it still doesn't work, click the driver tab, and click "update driver."

I cant find my touchpad icon

Hello,

You can do a system restore in your computer to revert it back to the known good condition.

go to start or pearl > Accessories > System tools > system restore. Select the date when the synaptics driver was still in your computer.

I hope this helps.

Dell Inspiron N5040 touchpad not working while charging

If battery works and ac adapter has problems that means electrolytic capacitors maybe dried up(not supplying the current needed to run the laptop) and has to be cured by using the laptop more often.

I have to hit touch pad 3-4 times to work when doing anything Dell Inspiron 1501

Make sure you have the latest touchpad driver from support.dell.com, then in the touchpad settings (Control panel, Mouse, touchpad tab) adjust the sensitivity.
If adjusting the sensitivity has no effect then it may just be wearing out, which would mean a palmrest replacement. Those are around $20

How can I change the settings on my Dell Inspiron E1405 touchpad? I don't find "Mouse" or "Printers and Other Hardware" listed in the Control Panel. I want to speed up the movement of the touchpad but I...

I think that the E1405 uses the Synaptics Touchpad, so the settings should be found under Start > Programs > Synaptics. However, if it is not there, then try C:\Program Files\Synaptics. The application that controls the settings should be found in one of those two places. Good luck!

Tap to click does not work dell inspiron 1501

Tap to click is the feature of the touchpad driver. Uninstall any existing touchpad drivers and then restart the computer.
Go to www.support.dell.com enter the computer service tag and get the drivers for the touchpad from there. Also update the BIOS of your computer to the most recent version. In most cases a part replacement is not needed and the issue should be fixed.

Dell Inspiron 1501 Touchpad locked up

Check the system setup F2 at start, and ensure the touchpad is enabled, next try an external mouse, see if it works.
If and external mouse works, the touch pad has failed and a new palmrest is needed.
