Why does the check upper thread notice continue to come on when the thread is not broken?

When i am embroiderying, the machine beeps the normal sound to say check upper thread.. If i push the start button it sews again correctly without me even checking the upper thread. Because nothing in wrong with upper thread..

I suspect fluff or lint is interfering with the sensor. Might be time for servicing.

    Turn off the Thread Sensor. You have to do this each time there is a thread change. :-)23 Feb.2014

If you are using a standard tension of 4 or 5 and this problem has developed over time, the most likely cause is lint deposited between the tension disks.......
Raise the presser foot and with a length of scrap fabric, use an action like flossing your teeth to get between the disks......in extreme cases a probe (old needle) may be used very gently to remove thread and lint, but be VERY careful not to scratch the polished surfaces.

Ensure that all is clean and free of lint and jams, this is the most likely cause....now for tension troubleshooting .......

This solution is for tension problems...if you cannot form any sort of stitch, the issue is quite different, so please let me know if you need a different problem solved.....

It is quite long, but just work through each section in order.
The "knotting up" can reveal a lot. If you have loose threads on one side or the other, the tension on the opposite side will be the culprit.

QUICK SUMMARY FIRST:
Ensure sharp new needle, 
Thread guides and Bobbin are Clean & Clear of lint
Set Top Tesion to 4 ....then....
Balance Bobbin to suit.

TOP THREAD TENSION:
If the looping threads are on the underside as you sew, it is the top tension. Top tension ought to be between 4 & 6 (this variation to allow for the different weights of fabric in your 
projects). 

IS YOUR NEEDLE SHARP ?
If you are using a needle that has seen quite a deal of work, or you suspect it may be blunt, change it for a new one !

TOP TENSION & GUIDES:
Make sure that when you thread the machine the presser foot is up so the thread goes between the discs and not to one side, top tension between 4 and 6, and that you have threaded through all the guides, including the last one, usually on the needle arm, just above the needle clamp.

It may be there is lint trapped between the discs, this will keep them slightly apart and reduce the actual tension, sometimes dramatically.

If tensions appear correct, and the thread is definitely in the channel between the discs, but still too loose and looping, try raising presser foot and remove your thread.

Now, with a 2" (50mm) wide strip piece of fabric 8 - 10" (20 - 25cm) moistened with methylated or denatured spirit, gently insert the fabric strip and clean between the discs with 
a see saw / to and fro action.

In the worst cases, gentle use of a needle to pick & remove the jam may be necessary, but be very gentle and make sure the tension is set at Zero and the presser foot is raised, (to 
disengage tension plates).... do not gouge or score the plates, they need a polished surface to work correctly.

BOBBIN TENSION:
Far less common, but if the loose threads are on the top, it is bobbin tension that is loose, it too may have lint in the spring and be giving a "false" tension. 

I would not recommend fiddling with bobbin tension without good reason, it may end up with missing small screws and spring pieces, however, you can take the needle plate off to clean 
the hook race area (where bobbin case sits) 

...this is just good housekeeping, my wife does this every time she replaces the bobbin....

just take it out and clean the bobbin case and the fixed metal hook race with a small brush to remove lint. If there is a significant amount of lint, use a vacuum and small brush to get the worst.

Then wipe all this area with a cloth or cotton bud (Q tip) moistened (not soaked) with methylated spirit, especially if there appears to be fine dirty deposits....oil and lint combine to conspire against you.

If it seems likely that you ......really ....do .....actually .....need .....to adjust the bobbin case, first check there is no lint trapped in the metal spring where the thread is tensioned. 

TOP LOADER:
Drop-in Bobbin case will look similar to this image with the tension screw in the middle of the metalwork....

4c76dc1.jpg ...the other screw at one end is holding it all together, so beware....it is not a tragedy to undo the whole lot and clean it, but very gingerly and lay the bits out in sequence and orientation, or you risk tearing your hair out !

FRONT LOADER:
....this is a bobbin case from a front loading machine and works in a very similar fashion to the top loader with drop in bobbin, again, if you dismantle it, take care so you can put it all 
back properly.

GETTING THE BALANCE RIGHT:
When you are certain there's no trapped lint in top tension or bobbin, set the top tension to 4 and the bobbin tension to a point where you just begin to feel resistance.

Try using good quality thread of contrasting colours so you can more easily spot the changes.

Set your zigzag to one width less than maximum (eg. 5 of 6 ...or... 4 of 5 etc) and sew a sample for a few inches and check the result.... adjust the bobbin tension screw very little at 
a time, perhaps 1/16 of a turn.

You may find you are playing with this balance for some little while and if you are putting the needleplate on and off each time begin to think it cannot be correct to do this.....BUT....it is, 
and eventually, you do get a "feel" for the correct tension and then it happens quite quickly.....as a user you won't be doing it very often unless there is lint built up (or are there small hands at work around the house !?!?!)

OTHER ISSUES:
If you live near the ocean as we do, salt air can play havoc with metalwork inside and out, so to help minimise this, keep a few small packets of dessicant (silica gel) in your machine 
case....no case ? then make some sort of cover ! 

Same applies in any damp or humid environment, keep your machine dry and dust free.

Budget for a proper full service every couple of years (more often if heavily used) and if you don't use your machine for a few years, be aware that old oil will dry out and combining with 
dust and form a "clag" like glue (another reason for some sort of cover, even a teatowel !)

FINALLY, A WORD ON THREAD:
If it is worth spending the time, energy and money on making something that you would like to give lasting enjoyment......use quality thread, .......it may seem to cost a little more at the 
time, but the results, ease of use and added longevity will be worth the extra, and as a bonus, your tension troubles may be fewer and further between, because there is a more consistent diameter with good thread, and less compensating to be done by your tension plates and less thread breaks !

If you tighten up your needle thread, reduce the tension of the needle thread.
For embroidery, and zig-zag, and because the needle makes side movements, it needs more needle thread.
So try to keep you needle thread not very tight,
and tight up your bobbin case tension more, so that the two threads meet under the meterial.

Pull the thread through the tension assembly and test it to make sure the tension is working correctly.
(To do this test, adjust your tension setting to normal or medium or 5 or something in the middle. Raise the presser foot and pull the thread through the tension. It should pull easily!! Lower the presser foot and pull the thread. It should pull noticeably harder.) If it passes this test, continue up through the take up lever,then down through the thread guides to the needle.
If it passes this test you need to remove the bobbin case and check for burrs or rough spots. If you find any ,use an emery stick to remove them and then buff the area with fine steel wool.Put the bobbin case back in ,check your bobbin(change it ) and try again by turning the handwheel slowly and watching to see where thr thread is snagging

SOURCE: Bobbin thread not feeding into the upper needle thread

completely unthread the machine....ensure the needle piston shaft is in the correct position and retread the upper. reinstall the bobbin and turn the machine by hand to engage the bobbin thread. Draw the bobbin thread through the stitch plate and with the needle thread, allow to trail off the back. attempt to sew a piece of scap material.

please let me know what happens at this point.

My upper thread is not feeding through the machine while embroidering. What could the problem be?


Install a brand new embroidery needle.

Remove the upper thread totally. Always raise the presser foot, then rethread from the beginning. Make sure you are threading it correctly. Test your stitch--just do a straight stitch on some scrap fabric. If it is still a problem, loosen the upper tension. Test again. If it hasn't improved, then there is possibly a piece of thread stuck in the tension disk or the tension disk is broken or faulty.

To clean the tension disk, remove the upper thread from the machine. Loosen the tension disk all the way and raise the presser foot. Dampen a piece of pearl cotton with rubbing alcohol and gently pull it down through the tension disk a few times. Rethread your machine, adjust the tension disk to the midpoint between high & low numbers and test again.

There might be some clogged piece of thread at the bobbin. Better check thoroughly the machine if there are small pieces of threads or hair strings that are inserted which can block the rollers.

My bobbin thread continues to bunch up on the back of the fabric.. How can I fix this?


Is it really the bobbin thread that is globbing? Check closely. Usually it is the upper thread accumulating under the fabric.

If it is in fact the bobbin thread, then the bobbin case is not threaded correctly, the bobbin case tension needs adjustment, or it is broken and needs replacement. There are web sites and YouTube videos that show how to adjust the bobbin case tension.

QUICK FIXES: Remove all the thread from the machine. Clean the area around the feed dogs and bobbin area. Oil as instructed in the owner's manual using ONLY fresh, good quality sewing machine oil (only 1-2 drops each spot). Install a brand new needle insuring it is installed correctly. Avoid using fuzzy, old, or bargain bin thread. Rethread: Be sure you raise the presser foot BEFORE threading the upper thread so it will seat properly in the tension disk--and check to make sure you are threading the machine correctly. Check that the upper tension is set properly (the factory standard is usually the halfway point between the high & low number on the selection). Test on a scrap of the fabric you wish to sew. Adjust the upper tension--either tighten to pull the upper thread toward the top of the fabric, or loosen to pull more upper thread down.

Check everything... Bobbin is empty or jammed? Foot is not completely down or you have the wrong foot with a particular stitch? You need to change the thread color( embroidery machine?) or thread broken? Good luck!

Sounds like a tension issue. Try rethreading the upper thread first and then lower the upper thread tension.

It sounds as if you have tried all the usual fixes so it might be a problem with the actual circuitry causing this. I'd take it into nearest Singer the sewing machine dealership or shop where you bought it and ask them to service it (or if still under warranty, for them to diagnose the fault).

Hello,

Take a very good look at the upper thread very well because it is possible that it is truly broken because for it to stop working something must have truly happen.

If after careful look and nothing was observe broken, then i advice you carry out maintenance check or service on the machine. This will help in a long way to fix the problem.

Try changing threads. If you're not using embroidery thread specifically, the "treatments" they use on different threads can really cause problems.

Designer One "broken thread"


If the upper thread spool is spinning allowing slack to the inlet of the tension assy and the machine gives a broken thread indication shortly afterward, the pre-tension assy needs to be adjusted. If the machine has the original "snap in" tension assy that was in the first generation of Designer 1, have it replaced with the modern "lay in" tension assy. Slack at the spool should never cause a broken thread indication as long at the thread is in the pre-tension assy.
Sulky thread will work as well in a Designer 1 as any other embroidery thread as long as it is properly adjusted.
One thing that you can look for, when the machine is sewing, watch the thread as it passes out of the left hand side of the tension disks. It should exit the disks at the 9 o'clock position. If it starts to drift up to the 10 or 11 position and then you get a broken thread warning, the pre tension must be increased.
