IBM ThinkPad iSeries 1400 LCD not functioning

I have an IBM ThinkPad 1400 as in the title, and when I turn it on the LCD panel doesn't turn on. If i connect an external monitor I can see the desktop but no picture on the internal monitor. If i can fix it or the internal screen is not usable anymore?

I am afraid you are correct, your laptop screen is not usable and unless you’re a trained professional I do not recommend trying to repair the monitor itself. In fact, to do so would be rather dangerous to your own well being, but you do not have to throw your ThinkPad away. You could continue to use it with the external monitor or you could send it into Dell and pay them for a replacement. Look around though, there are probably other people who could provide this service for less, beause large corporations usually charge you more than necessary.

Not knowing where you live makes it tricky to give you useful advice. Avoid ebay, but go for amazon. If you're in the UK, ebuyer, dabs and pricerunner are all good.

You need to check the type number on the service pad at the bottom of the laptop, if you cannot find the type, download both vidoe drivers, the wrong one will just not work.

How to remove the display on IBM T21 laptop

The laptop screen is secured to the laptop with screws at the hinges.
There are usually two screws per hinge. The LCD screen has one ribbon cable and possibly a power connector for the back lighting attached to the motherboard near the hinges. Disconnect these before you lift the LCD off the base, they are under the plastic panel above the function keys next to the hinges.

IBM ThinkPad 380Z LCD Inverter

Glad to see you found your cable. The inverter would be my best guess, then possibly the back light, but more than likely the inverter.

Iseries thinkpad

try hooking it to an external monitor and see if it works. If it does then you need to check which part is bad.Possible defective parts in order of the cheapest is :inverter card, then LCD Cable, then LCD Display, then system board. If it does not work with external monitor then try drivers or system board because the video is built into the board. If all else fails I will buy it from you if the price is right.
