The camera is switched on, The message verbatim is: one of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and windows does not recognise it,

I am sorry mikieol but I don;t know what you mean by platform

We tried putting the card into my daughter's camera and that worked perfectly OK. We also connected our camera to the TV and were able to view the pictures

"Windows" is your platform, BTW. Try this -- next time you're at your friends house, or at the office, take your SD memory card out, and stick it in a reader (or take it to CVS, etc.) Make sure that your SD card isn't messed up, simply by putting into a media card reader.

That's one thing you should try.

I just skimmed the manual and couldn't find anything about special USB modes.

    what platform are you using

Where are you getting the error message? On your PC, or the camera? And what is the exact message VERBATIM?

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program, such as Picasa.

Turn off CPU, Unplug Power cable, And all usb devices, let it sit for about 20mins. Plug it all back in. Turn on the CPU! Also make sure if your device requires "DRIVERS" or if you have a CD download and install that before anything.

The programs can be downloaded at the support section of the Panasonic website. You can also use an inexpensive card reader to download your pics to a folder you create on your desktop.

Pics too dark

look at the sensitivity settings (shutter speed), you may have set it too high (set it to auto). Try turning on intelligent exposure to auto/on. Turn intelligent/auto ISO on. Use iA setting for full automatic ono the dial when shooting. As for the message digital pic will go to memory, then that prob means you don't have a SD memory card installed, or it's not formatted, or set to locked.
give those a try.

My name is Chris and my wife just bought a Panasonic DMC-TZ5 digital camera. I was trying to install the hardware to my computer and have the installation disc. Everything is loaded onto my computer, but...

I use a memory card reader (about $15) to retrieve photos and toss the software that comes with the camera.

Another possible solution would be to go to panisonic.com and download the latest software.

Hope this helps and have a Happy Thanksgiving!

PC does not recognize Lumix DMC-TZ5 as USB device

I contacted Panasonic and here is what they told me to do and it worked.

"No additional drivers are needed as it runs off the USB drivers imbedded in
your Windows OS. That being said though, it is not that the USB ports on the
front of your computer are faulty, just that they are in fact a HUB and not
the port which is located on the back of the PC. Windows does not
traditionally like reading external Hard drives (your camera becomes one when
PC connect mode is selected) through a HUB. In this case I would still
strongly recommend connecting to the back of the PC."
