I assume you have a Craftsman or Liftmaster operator and you are talking about the photo eyes (sensors). If this is true thanone light will remain on if there is power to it and the other will go out when the photo eye beam is blocked or are not lined up.

Thank you for your your question bry4man. I look forward to answering any more of your questions.

If when you try to close the door the main light flashes 10 times and the door starts down and then reverses to the open position you have a door sensor problem. Make sure the lights in the sensors are not flickering ever so slightly. The color of the lights doesn't mean anything. The keypad sounds like a separate problem. Make sure the battery is good.

Sensors are working properly. That is not your problem. The light blinking 5 times is sending the code for RPM sensor or motor overload. Most likely if it is doing this with the door closed it is a bad RPM sensor which is a small printed circuit board just in front of the motor.

Remove the cover from the motor unit and check the drive gear. It is a white nylon gear just in front of the motor. Also check the door springs. One of them could be broken.

My older Craftsman garage door opener comes down about 6" & then goes back up. I just replaced all the rollers o& the opener worked fine. Then I tightened the chain on the opener & it worked ok...

If the main light flashes 10 times when the door goes back up it is a door sensor problem. You chain should sag just a little. If you tighten it too much it will click as it goes over the sprocket. You can increase the down force which is an adjustment near where all those white wires go. A 1/4 turn should be enough. Release the door from the opener and operate it by hand. It should move freely and when you have the door approximately waist high it should stay put. Neither raising nor closing.

My craftsman door opener went up half way and stopped. Light on u nit was not on and indicator light flashed 5 times, the repeats 5 flashes. billybob

The code for that light flashing 5 times is 'motor overheated or RPM sensor failure'. The RPM sensor is a small printed circuit board just in front of the motor. Release the door from the opener and operate by hand. It should raise easily and should stay put when it is about waist high.

Garage door does not reverse

Hi again, Thank you for getting back to me, this indicates that the main unit is OK and one or both of the sensors is bad. The basic principle of the safety circuit is that the circuit is complete or connected until broken by an object, There are several different types of sensors the most common is an led transmitter on one side and an optical receiver on the other, which shines a beam of light that requires the sensors to be aligned to "see" each other. The light on the sensor indicates that it sees the beam and if you wave your hand in front of it, it should go out indicating that it doesn't thus breaking the circuit. The light constantly on indicates something shorted in one of the sensors. You could probably hook them up one at a time to see which one might be at fault but then again you would want to replace them as a pair, and a new pair of sensors should put you back in working order. Good Luck, this should Fixsya!

Garage door doesn't close properly

I just had this problem and I cleaned the sensors and made sure all the lights on the sensors were on. They were but yet the propblem persisted.

I checked all the wires and found that the wires were touching where they went into the unit. I separated them and all is working fine now.
