If this is the first time unit has been fired up, you likely have air in the lines to purge first. Also make sure the gas supply is on/open. and that if there is a fuse present on the control board (likely a 3 Amp fuse) make sure it has not blown (which can happen simply by close proximity lightning strikes.)

Letting the unit go through the ignition sequence several times will purge the line. If furnace "locks out" on third start attempt, shut it off and start cycling it again until the furnace comes on..

This assumes the installation was checked for leaks initially.

Atwood 38591 Excalibur xt 1522 LP two stage furnace. Operates on high fan only

Hi Dave. I'm Roger. Its normal for a furnace to shut down completely when the set point on the thermostat is reached. The first and second stages are used when the temp. gets close to set point. The heat output drops to its low stage at around 3 degrees before set point. Check your owners manual for specifics on the fan though.

Atwood 1522 LP furnace fan operates at one speed only

Furnace only works at one speed, high and low fan is usually used for AC. It never has had 2 speeds on furnace correct? Furnaces usually only have 1 speed, except for some home models.

What is a two stage furnace?

Two stage heating is a method to make your home more comfortable while reducing your energy. Sound contradictory? Well, that's the truth. Two-stage furnaces are designed to operate like two separate furnaces, maintaining more consistent comfort levels throughout the home. Your furnace or air-conditioner maintenance group will be able to give you more information regarding their working, but I'll explain the basic facts.
A two-stage furnace will always start in the first stage and attempt to meet the heating demand. During mild winter only the first stage will be required that to running at about 60-70% of its efficiency. When temperatures drop, the furnace adjusts itself and enters the second stage to meet the demand for heat within the home. With two-stage heating, a homeowner has no need to keep adjusting the thermostat.

Why heater coils glow?

It sounds like you're describing one of two things. The hot surface ignitor in a gas-fired furnace, or the resistive heat strips in an electric furnace.

The hot surface ignitor in a gas-fired furnace lights the burners. This ignitor in modern furnaces serves the same purpose as the standing pilot flame did in older furnaces. It provides the required heat to ignite the gas at the burners. Without an ignition source, a gas-fired furnace cannot provide heat. When the ignitor is activated it will glow bright orange or yellow.

The resistive heat strips in an electric furnace actually provide the heat to a home or building. When the furnace turns on, the heat strips are activated and usually glow orange when they reach peak temperature. In almost all cases, the heat strips are not easily seen or accessed without removing covers or panels inside the furnace.

I have a honeywell thermostat model # th5220d1003-0636 & need to know what connections to make for gas forced air heat.

This is a Focus Pro 2 heat,2 cool thermostat. If you are connecting this to a single stage(1 heat) residential furnace then your connections are: At the thermostat the R and Rc therminals are internally connected so you can connect your R terminal wire from the furnace to the R terminal at the thermostat(this is your 24 volt supply for both heating and cooling. The W or W1 wire (heating) from your furnace you connect to the W1 terminal at the thermostat. The W2 wire from your furnace(if your furnace is a 2 stage furnace) you connect to the W2 terminal at the thermostat. The G wire from your furnace(indoor fan) you connect to the G terminal at the thermostat. The Y1 wire(cooling) from your furnace you connect to the Y1 terminal at the thermostat. The C wire(common or neutral) from the furnace you connect to the C terminal at the thermostat.
