Hello;
The most common reason that laserjet's get grey background print-outs is that the toner cartridge's drum has gone bad. I have seen it many, many times on new and old cartridges and the only way to fix it is to buy a new toner cartridge. Sorry for the bad news.
Good Luck!

HP1020 printer that will not print

Is the printer connected locally to this print? If so move it to a computer that has been working ok and try it on that computer. If the problem moves with the printer then the problem is the printer not the driver or computer. If the printer is networked make sure the IP address is not the same as another devise on the network. Also print to it from another computer on the network and see if it prints.

No printing

A common reason for background shading is a low toner. Install a new genuine brother toner. If you have already loaded a generic toner in the drum unit, it is too late. You have damaged the drum asm. You can still buy a new 2800 with new supplies for just a little more than a new drum asm. Did you have the grey baqckground before you worked on it?
