We just installed a new toner cartridge so I can't work why the toner light is flashing. The toner shouldn't tbe the problem because it's brand new. I don't have a manual so I don't know what this J1 error is. I've pulled out the drum and toner cartridge and put it back in again. But its not helping. Also, there's a lot of carbon dust sprinkled around inside so I don't know if that's causing the problem. Any suggestions would be great.

Yes...Duct tape works wonders. Most of these printer cartridge have built in chips that match to the printers they were designed for. This is the manufactures way of saying "Hey, we practically gave away our printers, so now you have to pay outrageous prices for the ink"!!! Place the tape on the light and enjoy the savings ;-)
Make sure you have the right code: J1 or J2.
one is for the drum and the other is for the ink.
Make sure the toner unit is for this model and not for a different model.
If the old modual is still available, check the connectors at the back and see if they are the same.
If anything else Call Xerox for repair. If the cartridge was bought through Xerox have your reciete available for warrenty.
If repairs still need to be made, A Xerox service call may be needed in order to fully repair the copier and warrenty the cartridge.
that is the message for low or out of toner. What you are doing by tapping it is just lostening the reemaining ink in the cartridge. If the cartridge is new, have it replaced where ever you purchased it because most likely its defective.
Which cartridge did you change? If its the toner cartridge, make sure none of the packaging materal is left on it, same with the drum cartridge. First and simply remove and reseat the cartridges.
What I suspect with the blank copies is a broken transfer corotron wire.
Open the right side door. On the bottom you will see some whit plastic rollers. Above that you will see an opening about 1/2 inch wide. There is a very thin wire in that channel. That wire has probably broken causing your blank copies, I highly suspect that is broken.. That wire when it is dirty also causes really poor copy quality.
Also clean all the mirrors and glass well. That will cause poor copy quaility issues.
The J1 error means the toner cartridge needs to be replaced. Since you just replaced the cartridge, you should remove the cartridge and repeat the following steps..
Shake the new toner cartridge
horizontally four or five times and then
remove the cover.
Slide the new toner cartridge in until it
locks in place.
It sounds like the cover may still be on the cartridge.
