Epson ink jet printers occasionally come up with an error in the status monitor "unknown error..contact authorized service.."

This seems to relate mainly to the waste ink pads and the number of ink drops fired over the printers lifetime.

Having looked at a number of printers with this error sometimesthe ink pads overflow

The fix for this is a free download of a utility that can, among a few other things, reset the ink counter. I tried it today on a Epson R1 and it works fine.

Go to http://www.ssclg.com/epsone.shtml
Note: when the program is started, only the main window displays. Close that and then right click on the icon in the system tray to get the useful stuff.

The utility is similar in function to the Epson one available from
ftp://ftp.epson.com/drivers/epson10281.exe, but the Epson one is Win98 only

Welcome-

Unhook the "printer cable" from the back of the printer. The power cord would still be plugged in to the wall. With paper loaded normally, turn the printer off for 10 seconds, or so. This is done to clear out any remaining DATA or INFORMATION that may still have been in the printers system, from when the PC was previously connected. Now reach over and turn the printer on as normal. The printer should come on and go to a normal READY CONDITION, with no ERROR LIGHTS on. If you get an ERROR LIGHT on, then you know you have a problem in your printer. If there are no ERROR LIGHTS on, then reach over and turn the printer off again. Now hold-in on the "Paper Button" [the button with the picture of a piece of paper next to it] and reach over and turn the power button on, as normal. Continue to hold in on the paper button for about 3 to 5 seconds, but release the power button after turning your printer on. Release the paper button once you can hear and see the printer starting to initialize and start to pull-in a piece of paper. The printer will print out an "Internal Epson Self-Test Copy". If everything is working correctly in the printers "PAPER FEED ASSEMBLY" and "CARRIAGE/CARTRIDGE ASSEMBLY", the self-test copy should be printed out and correctly fed thru the printer...AS A GENERAL RULE: If the self-test page prints out correctly, then usually your printer is working normally. This does not mean your printer may not be dirty, or have another service related problem, or even bad cartridges. It just means the printer is basically working normally as far as the internal tests go. You could run this self-test several times [just be sure], but usually if it works once it will do the same again. If your printer is working ok, then your problem could be in your PC: bad drivers, bad printer cable, bad software, etc. I'm sorry, but I don't work on PC's, so I can't help you with those type problems. You may need to get help from a PC Tech if you determine your problem may be in your PC/System. If the self-test does not print out normally, then you can assume the problem is in your printer. Let me know how the stand alone test went and if it seems like a printer problem, I will help you further, if I can...Good Luck!

thanks

tom

Hi, did you clean the waste tank properly? make sure the head is free and situated @ the right place. If printer on and you open the cover is the cartridges moving so that you can replace them? check to see that contacts behind head or cartridges is clean since you said you had to replace the ink by. Be careful for refilled cartridges it causes a lot of ink to go loss

This is a common problem and can be resolved locally without actually having to send it anywhere.

If you want a bit more information on what "Service Required" actually means then this page will help with the background as well as providing the necessary link to a reset utility (via the Quickfind part).

In quick terms what you need is the SSC utility to reset the waste counter and then either get it serviced (ie: the waste pads) changed locally by a service agent in Menorca, or fit an external waste ink tank.

Plenty of resources on the web that explain how to do it either as a DIY or kits you can get that have everything you need.

Hope that helps.

Epson r230 general error

Blink alternately or not? If alternately, the message is not "general error". but "service required" It's true to reset waste ink counter. But, i think it's not service required. when trun on printer ready? But when start to print red lights blink at same time? Problem with chip at ink tank. Check connector at chip and at head carriage. It's may be dirty, and not good connection. try to use another chip.

Hi my R1800 has 2 flashing red lights (top) and no power light. What can i do? MAria

Hi.
It could be your ink tray has overflowed.
There is software http://www.ssclg.com/epsone.shtml which might help.

Install this program, set your printer model and the driver (Epson Stylus Photo R1800) when it starts up. Close the program, and it will minimize to the
tray on the taskbar - right click on the icon and goto "Protection Counter". Choose
"Reset Protection Counter". Choose "Yes" to the question about the waste ink pads,
then switch the printer off for 1 minute. This should cure the problem.

It might be worth a try

Flash feed paper & ink light my epson r1800 printer

Do you mean that the paper light flashes at the same time as the ink light or do they flash alternately (ie: paper on, ink off -> paper off, ink on)?

If so the waste ink pads are full and you need to do the following:

1. Reset the waste ink counter:
Grab the tool linked from the wasteink.co.uk site (see bottom).

2. Redirect your waste ink into an external tank OR replace your waste ink pads.. (external tank is easier).

Instructions for the R1800 are available from this site

If the lights are doing something different, please post again with detailed information about how they flash and I can what else it might mean.

Hope that helps.
