Will you please look on the bottom of your notebook for this sticker and provide the exact model as described and located in this sticker. Look for item #1 and post that back to me using the comment box below.
You may also look for a key with letters on them in the same color as the Fn key. You want to find the key with a speaker and a line through it. Press and hold the Fn+the key together. This mutes and unmutes your speakers. There is also keys for volume up and down, usually page up and page down, press and hold the Fn key plus the volume up key. There should be an onscreen display of the volume increase. Does this resolve your problem?

Reinstallations of XP sometimes do not install all of the sound files needed. Do a google search for UAA, it is Microsoft's audio file. Download it, install it and then run Windows update. The drivers for your machine should be under the Hardware section of the updates.
