If you have a cable box, it may be set up for the full aspect. I just got a hd box for my 53" Hitachi and also notice the aspect dose not change using the remote. The guy installing the box was pushing so many buttons during set up I have no idea how to change without calling them. Hope this helps.

This is normal. Depending on what you have connected to it the lines could be white, black and white specs, or green. Just mode will show the entire picture event the parts that aren't supposed to be seen. I would not recommend that setting. Full is the best mode if you want to see the entire picture in the correct ratio.
That is because you are watching the picture in the 4:3 aspect ratio. This is normal when you are watching a channel that is being broadcast in 480 or digital. But once you tune to a station that has 1080 or at least 720p which is true high def then the picture should expand to 16:9 aspect ratio. It will switch between the two automatically as it determines what type of signal it sees. You can force the resolution to change by pushing the format or aspect ratio button on the remote but you will lose picture quality.
I have this same problem with my hitachi 55 inch ultravision luckily i have a warrenty still in effect so i called them and they said...
Analog channels are not formatted for wide screen aspect (4, 6, and 10 ect.) this is a normal thing don't worry. It automatically returns to 4:3 because analog is full screen only, and it will return to 16:9 otherwise or whatever you have it set to. Nothing you can do but the good news is your TV isn't broken!
Symptom: No control of aspect, DCAM may come on by itself, anything other than 480i into component causes rolling and tearing Cause: Replace I010, This part is a 3.3 volt (micro) to 5 volt (other logic) level shifter HD74HCT245AF, Hitachi part number CK38491R Hope this was helpful, big IRISH.
Normallly, if the picture size button on the remote for the television does not achieve the desired affect, then, a cable box or a satelite box is where the change needs to be made.
A Motorola Cable box needs to be set up to go to a wide screen or zoom when an analog signal is detected.
Some Dish Network boxes have Size buttons on their remotes and also in their main menu.
It's difficult to determine the repair without knowing the types of the peripherals.
Hope this helps.
You should have a button or setting on the remote that says "picture size" or "aspect". One of those is set too "zoom" mode which will cut off the bottom and top of the frames. You want it to be in 16:9,Normal or Full mode (or whatever your set call it) to get the correct aspect. Or if you have a HD satellite rcvr. you might of placed it in the zoom mode as well.
