Gateway laptop won't play media or detect usb/cameras/dvds

Hi,
my laptop recently stopped playing music and videos that are on my computer(this does not affect online videos such as youtube videos, only content on my computer), and will not detect dvd's, my camera, flash drives or other external devices. Any ideas what the problem could be and if there is anything I could try that may fix this? Thanks!

Click on Start>Right-Click My Computer>Click on Properties>Click on Hardware Tab>Device Manager. You will see a list of all of your hardware devices. Look for DVD/CD controller and click on the "+" sign to show the make and model of your DVD adapter. Right click on it and click on Troubleshooting. While you are there click on "Update Drivers" also, see if there is a new driver. Try doing the same thing for Video and Sound. Let me know how it turns out.

Are you sure yours is a DVD player? It could only be a CD-CD writer, which will NOT play DVDs.
Open your control panel ->system->hardware->device manager and click on the DVD/CD-ROM drives icon. The listed devices will tell you if you really have a dvd player or not. If you do really have a dvd player, try a different dvd
