Question about GE JVM1660 Microwave Oven

1 Answer

Coupler has stopped turning

Sounds as if it wants to turn but no rotation. Happened after I was placing a firly heavy load on the turntable repeatedly. It is a GE over the range unit JVM1661 made in 2001.

Am hoping to buy parts and repair it myself.

The turntable system consists of the motor, the coupler, the turntable support with rollers, and the tray.

You can see and hear a video of how a turntable motor should sound when you rotate it by hand.

If yours won't rotate or it sounds like it's grinding, etc., you may have a bad motor or plastic coupler.

To replace either, you need to unplug power, then remove the bottom cover of the oven.

But first you should also be sure that the internal cooling fan is working, because in this model, that's where the stirrer and turntable motors get their power - from a tap on the cooling fan motor!

Probably the easiest way to check this is to remove your stirrer cover, place a cup of water on the tray, then microwave for about a minute.

Watch through the glass and see if the metal stirrer is slowly rotating.

If not, the problem may be a bad cooling fan.

It is vital that the cooling fan runs, or the magnetron will be destroyed, too.

If you're not sure how to remove your stirrer cover, it's covered in your owner's manual.

If for some reason you don't have your owner's manual, you can download GE owner's manuals and installation instructions here.

Spacemaker XL1800 turntable turns sometimes

I would say an internal post broke inside the motor. This often happens when a heavy item is placed on the tray.

There should also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting & testing.

Since it's less than one year old, it should be fully covered under warranty. I'd suggest contacting the manufacturer to get it fixed free.
