Question about Brother IntelliFax-2820 Laser Fax

1 Answer

Not receiving faxes

I have an answerphone set up with my 2820 Fax
Have set the settings to TAD and the required number of rings to receive a fax
We now no longer receive faxes - it was working previously
I need a fax to come in if I am not home, and also to receive a voicemail message if it is a phone call
(Have a Uniden answerphone set up thru the fax)

Wondering if this is fixable or do I try a new phone?
(Or can the 2820 be the designated phone and Telecom voicemail work in conjunction with the fax - might be an option?)

Make sure your answering machine is plugged in to the "EXT" jack on fax machine, and your main line plugged into "line". try setting fax rings to 1 or 2. set your answering machine to 4. your fax should intercept the call and if it hears the fax tone, will receive the fax. if it doesn't hear the fax tone, it should forward the call to your answering m/c.

I have a Brother Fax 2820 at home. It is connected to a TAD. I want an external fax machine to send and bypass the voicemail greeting and print the fax. I thought I set the machine to TAD. Any other...

try this paul. hook your phone line from your wall jack to your "line" jack on your fax. then run another phone line from your "external" jack on your fax to your "line" jack on your TAD. now, make sure your fax machine is still set to TAD. here is whats important...set your TAD to 4 rings or less. 2 is the recommened setting. also very important...when you record your outgoing message on your TAD, make sure you leave about 5 seconds of silence before you start recording your message. the reason for this is the fax machine needs to "hear" the CNG tones that originate from the sending fax so that it knows its a fax and then can take over the call. if it doesn't hear those tones because of noise (voices, etc), it will let call go to TAD. you can try to set your TAD to 4 rings, but that doesn't leave much time for fax to "hear" these tones. if you set to 4 and don't get all your faxes, try lowering the setting to 2 or 3 rings.

good luck and hth,

Brother 4100e Fax Problem - Caller ID won't work with Fax Machine

Usually, fax machines don't have caller ID capability.. If the sender's fax number appears on the faxes you receive, it's just that they have programmed it into their fax machine as a header.

Brother Intellifax 1270

There is a help menu on this machine. To print this out, just press the help button. To change the fax/tel ring, 1st have in mind how you want your fax machine to work. Do you have an a TAD connected? Do you want the fax machine to take priority over tel calls? The fax machine seizes the line after the set number of rings, that means any other device connected to other phone outlets, will not answer after the fax has answered. Have this in mind when you set the ring time. The TAD will have it's own ring time too.

CANNOT RECEIVE A FAX

Slim1234,
A multitude of problems might cause receive problems, and the User's Guide has no "receive Problems" section under troubleshooting - so here goes:

If I had to guess right off the bat, your problem is probably
that the FAX is in "FAX Storage" mode, and is out of memory.
In this mode, it will print FAXes until it runs out of memory.
See problem "g" below.

   a. Voice mail active on the line - if voice mail and FAX-2820 are
set to answer the line on the same number of rings, there's
no way to know which will answer first.

   b. Voice mail active on line - if voice mail is set to answer in
fewer rings than the FAX, then the FAX will always lose
(but you'll have no problems Xmitting).

   c. Call Waiting active on the line - the call waiting "boop" will
kill incoming FAXes (and outgoing FAXes too, but your
personnel will retry the outging ones until they succeed
and you may only hear complaints about incoming FAXes).

   d. Your FAX-2820 is set to "Manual" or "External TAD" mode.
Reset it to "FAX only" or "FAX/Tel" mode (depending on
your office use of the FAX telephone line).
How to do this: Menu/Set,0,1 <up/down to select mode>
                              press Menu/Set.
NOTE: your LCD display tells you your receive mode:
Mine says "Sleep 22:08 Fax", telling me I'm in "FAX only"
       mode, and its 10:08 PM.

   e. You've set the FAX to RING DELAY - if so, the FAX
must win. Setting ring delay to 00 tells the FAX to answer
the line silently (an advantage for a busy MD's office).
       How to change this: Menu/Set,2,1,1
       Ref: FAX-2820 User's Guide p.4-2

   f. You dont have a shared (FAX/human) line set to
"Easy Receive"; if someone answers the call and
Easy Receive is off, then they need to press START on
the fax machine front panel or dial *51 and hang up.
      How to change it: Menu/Set,2,1,3
      REF: Fax-2820 User's Guide p. 4-2

  g. You may be set up for "FAX storage."  In this mode, received
FAXes will be stored (and printed) until you run out of
memory (quickly done on a Brother FAX-2820), then you
get nada (but sending FAXes still works).
How to reset this: Menu/Set,2,5,1 <up/down>
      REF: Fax-2820 User's Guide p.6-2

  h. You may have set up FAX forwarding.  In this mode, sending
FAXes will work fine, but all incoming FAXes willl be sent
      to another telephone number.
How to turn it off: Menu/Set,2,5,1 <up/down>

If this laundry list of (sending OK, Receiving dead) scenarios
doesn't resolve the problem, email your FAX number to me
and we'll do some cross-country FAX debugging.

P.S.
The above features may have been set remotely by a
nefarious (or somewhat knowledgeable) individual - remember
that a little knowledge is a dangerous thing (even for
FAXes). See (extensive) remote programming instructions
on p.6-6 of the User's Manual.

To print out the caller ID list - and possibly find out the
   source of the remote programming:
   Menu/Set,2,0,3 <up/down to "print report">, Menu/Set,
    Start, <Caller ID report prints>, Stop/Exit

To recieve fax on brother

Press the 'RECEIVE MODE' button on the right side of the control panel, its next to the large 'FAX START' button. Here are your options :

Select Receive Mode
MANUAL
—You must answer all calls yourself. If you hear fax tones, press
Fax Start
to begin receiving the fax, then hang up. You can use this mode with
Distinctive Ringing. (See
Distinctive Ring
, page 8-1.)
FAX ONLY
—The fax machine automatically answers every call as a fax call. You
cannot receive a voice call, but you can dial out and make a voice call.
FAX/TEL
—The fax machine automatically answers every call. If the call is a fax, it
prints the fax. If the call is not a fax, it signals you with a double-ring (ring-ring),
different from the phone company ringing, to alert you to pick up the call. If you select
this setting, you’ll need to set the Ring Delay and F/T Ring Time features (on the
following pages). If you have extension phones on the same line as the fax machine,
set Ring Delay to 4. (See
For FAX/TEL Mode Only
, page 5-5.)
TAD:ANSWER MACH.
—This is the only setting in which you can use an external
answering machine. Your telephone answering device is connected to your fax
machine, and answers every call. Once the TAD answers, the fax machine listens for
fax tones. If it detects fax tones, it prints the fax.
The TAD setting works
only
with an external telephone answering device (TAD); it
does not work with telephone company Voice Mail. Ring Delay and F/T Ring Time
do
not
work in this setting.

What does "TAD" mean when it appears on the screen?

TAD is Telephone Answering Device. TAD mode is the only mode that can be used with an external telephone answering device (unless you are using a distinctive ring number for receiving faxes). Your telephone answering device must be connected to the jack on the fax machine (labeled "EXT" for USA). When someone dials your telephone/fax number (to send a fax or to speak to you), all the telephones (including the FAX) will ring according to the number of rings you set on the TAD. The Ring Delay setting is not recognized in the TAD mode. If you do not answer the call, the TAD will answer. As your outgoing message is playing, the Fax is in the background, silently listening for fax tones. If the FAX hears fax tones, it will automatically go into the receive mode. If the FAX does not hear fax tones, it remains silent, allowing the caller to leave a message. The above information is correct for a Brother fax machine. Is your fax automatically picking up the call or do you have to push a panel button to start the receive fax process? Perhaps the fax is already "in" your fax machine's memory and only needs a manual printout. Check the fax call log.

Setting the voicmail

Voicemail or telephone answering device (TAD). There is a BIG difference. Voicemail is product of your telephone service provider. If you have voicemail, most providers have a solution to this that you must arrange through them. If you have an answering machine, you can set your Brother to TAD mode. In TAD mode, if your answering machine picks up, (you must set your answering machine to answer in less rings than your fax), your fax will "eavesdrop" to listen for the fax tones from the sending machine. If it hears these tones, it will disconnect your answering machine and accept the incoming fax. If it does not hear the tones, it allows the answering machine to record the incoming message. If you are home. If you answer the call and hear a tone every 2.5 to 3 seconds, that signals an incoming fax. Simply touch *51 on the keypad of the phone you picked up on. You will hear some shrill tones. That is your fax machine attempting to receive the incoming fax. Hang up the phone you are on and it will receive the fax. In any case, make sure that the receive mode is NOT set to AUTO. Set the receive mode to TAD or MANUAL. If these instructions were not clear enough, let me know and I will send you DETAILED instructions. You can find the manual here: http://www.brother-usa.com/Data/Documentation/Fax/User/UM_FAX2820_FAX2920_MFC7220_MFC7225N.pdf If you need additional assistance, please let me know before you rate this solution. Can't receive fax

Pick up the receiver and see if you hear a fax tone noise. If so then push the start button and hang up. Is this machine on a dedicated line or shared with the main phone number? Sometimes some people will pick up the receiver on their fax machine dial the fax number and wait for a tone before sending. If this is the case the machine can not recognize that is a ax. Make sure your machine is set for auto receive if it is on a dedicated line.
