Phkj048 outside fan does not start unless it is spun

In the heat mode the outside fan hummed but did not start and the emergency heat comes on. the fan will work when it is spun it it's normal direction and the system seems to otherwise work once it starts up. the problem is that the next time it cycles on the fan will not come on unless it is spun again. is it the fan motor or perhaps a switch? thanks

It is the motor. There is a fan relay that you should change out as well. It is in your control box on your heat pump, most likey a brown block with some connectors on top. Make sure you get the same motor and relay that are in it and you get all the wire on the relay back in the same spot. The connectors are numbered

Replace the start Capacitor  on the motor, if it has one, else if it does not ,replace the motor as the start windings insuide of the motor are no longer workng.

Should like your unit is working fine unless this is constantly happening. If this is a constant thing then condenser coil if dirty, check thermostat setting

Coil icing up

make sure the filter is very clean. make sure all supply grills are unblocked and open. make sure the indoor fan is blowing. icing coil is normal during heating mode the system will defrost using a sensor. sometimes during cold wet weather the coil will stay iced up. sometimes in cooling mode when it is cool outside 60 degrees or less the coil will ice. low freon will make the coil ice up ,also defrost control not working will cause the coil to ice up

I have a goodman self contained heat pump that is 3 and 1/2 years old. I wake in the night to hear what sounds like the fan runnning and running and running and air moving thru the vents. Then I will hear...

Heat pumps are a very efficient design when working properly. But lose efficiency the colder it gets outdoors. I usually tell people when it drops below freezing to turn the thermostat to aux or em. heat. A heat pump can remove heat from 20°f air. But not very well. More heat at 30°f air, obviously, and so on. So the colder it is outdoors, the longer it will operate to remove heat from outdoors. And then, if it can't keep up, it brings on the electric heat elements to compensate. Now you are running both outdoor and indoor heat. This is where it's inefficient and costly. Also, the outdoor will start to freeze up. This is normal unless you can see a substantial amount of ice. The heat pump will engage defrost mode, cycling on the electric heat indoors. And defrost mode is actually cooling mode! The reversing valve in the heat pump switches to cooling mode, cycles off the outdoor fan, and defrosts for a set time or temp. So now your electric heat is engaged, and your indoor coil is a COLD coil! Not hot! Very inefficient. These 2 things are why your elec bill is higher in the winter. So it makes sense to me, if the elec heat is going to be on anyway, to move the tstat to aux or em. heat, when it's going to be below freezing outdoors. This will turn off the heat pump and use elected heat only. The only down side to this is, if you don't have enough elec heat to keep you warm, you may need both heat pump and elec heat. So trial end error until you find what works. Also, have a qualified tech check the system for operation and efficiency. Hope this helps!

Inside fan turns on when outside unit is in defrost mode when heat is selected. This causes it to blow cold air for about 10 to 15 minutes prior to the outside fan starting.

The inside fan will run while the unit is in defrost. The electric heat strips should kick on to help prevent you from feeling this cold air. When the unit is in defrost it is essentially running in the A/C mode. You should make sure the electric heat elements are working then go from there.

Sounds like your condencer fan motor is stuck. Can you take a long rod and when the power is off to the outside unit, spin the fan blade? Maybe it will be enough to get it working again.

Goodman package- no heat below 30 degrees outside

I believe the unit you are describing is a heat pump. Heat pump are great when the temperature isn't below 30 With low ambient temps. outside it is much more efficient and comfortable to run aux. electric heat from the heat pump.

My air handler comes on ,not the outside unit when my thermostat is in the off position even if i turn the thermostat down to 50 and have it turned off the air handler comes on for about 5 to 10 minutes...

If you have a standard thermostat the fan switch is for the air handler only. It completely over rides the thermostat for most settings. Now lets see this is what I'd expect:
fan switch on Indoor fan runs all time
Fan switch auto Indoor fan only runs when thermostat is set to cool or heat and the thermostat is turned up above room temp for heat or below room temp for cooling. In both of these modes the furnace blower comes on and stays on til the room temperature is satisfied. The outdoor unit only comes on for AC the out door unit will not come on for heat or the "on" setting on the thermostat. See exception 1 & 2 below...

Exception 1- (in a heat pump the out door unit runs in both heat and cool mode unless it has emergency heat turned on then it will not come on outside in the heat mode, and depending on the type of heat pump and furnace or air handler it is). A heat pump thermostat usually has "backup heat" and an "emergency heat" setting switch on the thermostat.
Exception 2 - On some thermostats they are made to cycle on the heat if the temperature reaches a preset temp (around 50'f usually but definitely by 40'f). This mode prevents freezing when if instance the homeowner is away or while the home is under construction. In this mode the fan inside can run but the heat usually comes on with it.
Exception3 - On some electric furnaces the heating strips may be individually controlled and thus not all come on at one time. This may give the feel of no heat especially if the room is cold.

Now there may be other exceptions but Ive tried to give you a heads up on some of the most common ones.
If you need more help please post more specifics about your unit/system as to for sure what switches are set to what setting and what is happening with each. My first though was that maybe your system is OK and you needed to know if the thermostat was working properly.

If this helpd you understand your problem would you please give me as hifgh a mark as you can. Thnaks for using fixya and good luck.

PHKJ048-1 outdoor fan stopped

This is nothing but a bad fan motor. Probably caused by rain down pouring off the roof into the unit. Try adding channel diverters that diverts water (a lip on the edge of the roof) >!
