It should have a screw on the bottom of the case (may be marked by the letter "O" for optical drive) remove that and drive should come out. Some may have a lever to press inside another compartment such as memory. This will make removal easier.

My Dell Inspiron 640m cd and dvd drive doesn't seem to work. It is not detecting any disc I place in the drive but only makes sounds for a few sec. And there is no icon that shows up on My Computer.

Please check in device manger if the device is detected by the computer.

you can reach the device manager by typing devmgmt.msc in the start run.

Check if the CD/DVD ROM Drive is listed with any yellow exclamation mark.

If yes, perform the following action.

Click on Start, Run and type regedit.
when you reach the registry editor
1. Click on + sign next to KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
2. Click on + SYSTEM
3. Click + CurrentControlSet
4. Click + Control
5. Click + Class
6. Under Class look for the following entry:{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
and Click on it.
7. On the right side of the editor look for "upper filters" and "lower filters"
8. right click on "upper filters" and "lower filter" and delete these entries.
9. Close the registry editor
10. Reboot the computer

Now you should be able to see you CD drive.

Please revert with your feedback.

Thank you for choosing Fixya

Hai i've dell Inspiron 640m laptop, i'm unable to write a cd/dvd. i'm using nero 7.0 version which i've installed it's showing the burning successfully but after completion of burning the CD/DVD is not...

in the Nero option look for the option "Do not eject Disk after burning" when u chose the disk buring option.check the image , if u chose this the disk will remain the CD/DVD drive...then after a few mins when Nero comes back to life(Some times it hangs) so the CD gets corrupted....just use the eject button on the CD ROM should be ok
Also try to use CDRW disk that way u can re-use it

Sound crackles on dell inspiron 640m

You might have a bad connection on your sound card or sound module. If you are savvy enough, you can easily check these. If not, take it to an authorized dealer. Good luck!
