You may have too much stuff running in the background using up ram and processor cycles. Press ALT CTL and DEL at the same time and open task manager. It will let you know how many processes are running in the background and how much your 5200+ is being used and how much ram too.The names of the processes can be quite cryptic so don't just start taking them out.Download the program Process Explorer and run that. It will bring up the same list. The difference will be that you will have the option to google the process and see what it does. You can then decide if you can get rid of it without effecting your computer.Next go to Start/Run and type in msconfig. This is where you can get rid of those start up programs. Deselect all but the ones that are related to your anti virus program. Reboot and check the task manager to see if it helped

If the computer has always been slow, then yes additional RAM will help. If you are running XP, 1 Gb or ram runs great, 2 Gb runs a touch better. If you are running Vista, I highly recommend moving to 2 Gb.

If the computer is generally getting slower and slower, then it just needs a tune-up/clean-up. I am assuming you are not computer savvy, so I would suggest calling a local computer shop. Ask them for a general cleanup service on your computer. Do not pay more than $100.

How can I upgrade/improve the capabilities of my Inspiron 1200

The best and quickest improvement is to add more RAM. Add another 512 Mb of RAM. If you already have a 512 Mb of RAM module then add another 512 Mb RAM module. If your laptop has 2X256 Mb RAM modules then you need to remove these and insert 2X512 Mb RAM modules.
The reason why you have 504 Mb RAM is that the video card has grabbed 8Mb of RAM off the main memory.

Problems with dell laptop slow operating too many downloads????

You can download everything until you have free space on HD drive. But you need at least 20 (minimum) percent of free space on disc for operating system.
That model usually have installed 80Gb hard drive and it is very good laptop and if you want to upgrade that laptop just replace disc with bigger one and add more ram memory (2Gb).

I am about to smash my laptop and I can't afford a new one now. It is a Dell inspiron 6000. It has slowed down, way down. Advice from this site led me to disable all sorts of stuff in my startup...

Since you already did those things to speed up your computer like disabling some start up program and that help in the computers performance but some application are still slow. The next thing that you can do is to remove some unneeded programs that are installed on the computer to free up some resources like Memory and hard drive. Do also a Dis De-fragmentation on your hard drive to clean and compact you drive. If you really like to speed the computer the best way to do that is to add up some RAM on this computer since the computer can support up to 2 GIG of RAM, this computer only came with 512 MB of RAM so adding RAM on the computer will definitely make it work faster. This is the type and specs of your RAM that you need DDR2 SDRAM - 400.0 MHz , PC2-3200 just go to a computer store and ask for that type of RAM.

COMP SLOW ALL THE SUDDEN!

I am no expert at vista yet but I can tell you that 2 gigs of RAM is not enough. You can disale some features in Vista, but it is a memory hog and you should probably be running about 4 gigs Ram.

Frustratingly slow

You should bumb your memory from 256 to at least 512, and better yet if at 1024.

Sluggish slow performance and bad keys

Sounds like both machines may have spyware / malware on them. I would download Malwarebytes Anti-malware scanner, it is a free download; can be found here: http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

Paying for the program gives you "real time" protection, but it is fully operational without paying the only difference is no real time protection is offered.

This will get rid of a lot of the junk that often gets installed on a computer over time.

The other thing to look at is upgrading your RAM, a lot of computers are sold with only 256 MB of RAM on XP machines and 2 GB on Vista machines; these are the bare min required to run Windows; you should max out the RAM for your machine; depending upon the age of the machine you should be able to add anywhere from 2 GB to 4 GB of RAM, really old machines may have a cap limit of 512 MB or 768 MB check with your manufacture before purchasing. Some motherboards will support more than 4 GB but unless you are running XP 64 bit or a 64 bit version of Vista; the 32 bit OS is only going to see a max of 4 GB in XP Home Edition it seems to only see a max of 3 GB.
