Samsung rs277 ice maker making only crushed ice

My Samsung Refrigerator/Freezer has been producing only crushed ice for a while now. When The ice dumped in the tray is actually pieces not cubes, which eliminates the possibility of getting cubed ice. Anyone know why or how to fix it?

There is a setting on the fridge you can choose from crushed or cubed. Are you putting crushed ice into the tray inside the fridge? If that's the case you are not going to get cubed ice. Sorry.

The way this refrigerator works, the water is poured into a tray. It freezes then is dumped into a bin for dispensing through the door. The seeting on the door panel (cubed or crushed) tells controls whether the ice is crushed before it is dispensed. My setting is on cubed. My problem is that my ice maker actually dumping fragments or pices of ice instead of cubes int the tray BEFORE it actually goes through the crushing mechanism. As such, I have no option of getting cubed ice.

It sounds like your tray is not filling up all the way before freezing. Try checking the water line that goes to your fridge. Make sure the water line is open all the way, and there are no kinks. Are the fragments the same size that are inside the tray, or do they look like chiped pieces of ice?.

Water line is unclogged. Valve is open. I watched the tray fill with water after running a test cycle. The twisting motion of the tray to dump the cubes is where the ice fractures and break into small pieces.

We had a service tech service our fridge for the same problem. Although the ice that was dispensed was not as fine as crushed ice, mainly chunks. In any case, he said this is a known problem and is typically resolved by ensuring the freezer temp is not set at the maximum setting. Ours is currently now set at 3 bars and is producing cubes. Not sure if reducing the temp was the ultimate fix as he also replaced the ice maker.

Your model has the twist tray style icemaker. The part number for you front section that contains the motor assembly is DA97-00258E Ice Maker Assembly. You can try by taking it out and seeing if the tray will return to the home position but stopping there make me question if the thermal fuse in wiring harness may have blown. We may need to test that wire also to see if the thermal fuse is still good, I will leave you some of the links and ready to help when you need me, Thanks, Sea Breeze

Samsung side by side ice maker not working

You have 2 separate valves, 1 for the water dispenser and 1 for the ice maker. (otherwise your ice maker would overflow every time you got water from the dispenser and your dispenser would flow every time the ice maker went to refill.) They are fed from the same tubing.

The cube/crushed ice motor is completely separate from the ice maker itself and should have absolutely no bearing on the water flow.

You have narrowed down the problem quite nicely to the ice maker water valve. There is one more thing to check though, the connector. There should be a multi-contact connector from the ice maker to the back wall of the freezer, usually 6-9 wires. Pull that apart and check the cord side (ice maker side) for any corrosion. BE CAREFUL NOT TO TOUCH THE OTHER SIDE AS THERE IS LIVE 110V!!! If you don't see any corrosion, still try try disconnecting and reconnecting 5-10 times and see if that solves your problem. If you see corrosion, unplug the refrigerator before working on the back wall part of the connector. [This connector besides powering the ice maker also allows the ice maker to control the water valve which can't be inside the freezer]

Ice maker doesn't work well

We have only had our refrigerator a little over a year and have already had to have the ice maker replaced 2 times. The second one isn't working much better than the previous one or even the one that came on it from the manufacturer. Each time we have had it replaced, we have gone through Samsung and they have sent someone out to replace. Why do these refrigerators not produce much ice?

check the arm on the bottom of the ice bin going back to the back wall of the freezer if it is in that little stirup then the solenoid could be bad or frozen. the solenoid lifts that arm which opens the flap on the front of the bin which lets the ice fall out without going through the crusher. clear as mud?

Found in the FAQ section on Samsung.com:
Samsung refrigerator freezers produce about 120 cubes per day, which is in line with most manufacturer specifications.
Empty the ice tray and let the unit run for 24 hours.
If fewer than 50 cubes are produced during the 24-hour test, then your refrigerator requires service. Please contact Samsung Service at 1-800-SAMSUNG to schedule a service appointment.
If your freezer is producing 50 to 90 cubes per day, try the following:
  • Set the freezer temperature display to a lower setting. Freezer temperature must be 5 degrees Fahrenheit or less for the ice maker to work properly.
  • Make sure that the water valve on the refrigerator water supply line is completely open. You can find the water valve where the refrigerator water supply line taps into your house water line.
  • If you have a water filter in your refrigerator, change the filter cartridge. For instructions, see your Users Manual.
If you want your freezer to produce more than 120 ice cubes in a day, try the following:
  • An ice maker typically makes 1 tray of ice every 90 minutes. To shorten the amount of time the freezer takes to produce a tray of ice, set the freezer temperature display to a lower setting.
  • If your refrigerator has a Power Freeze function, press the Power Freeze button to speed up the ice making process. In the Power Freeze mode, both the compressor and the freezer fan run for 10 hours continuously. The ice making interval is reduced from 90 minutes to 55 minutes. If the ice bucket fills in less than 10 hours, Power Freeze stops automatically.
NOTE: If you have just installed your refrigerator, it will take 6 to 12 hours for the refrigerator to produce ice.
You should throw away the first three batches of ice cubes that the ice maker produces (approximately 30 cubes) to ensure the ice maker is making ice from clean water.
