Question about Intel Dell Poweredge 860 Server 1-socket 1u Rack Server

1 Answer

Install linux I have been given a server which has windows server 2003 pre-loaded but I need to install Linux. When I put the Linux installation CD and reboot the server, it still boots in Windows. I checked the boot sequence in BIOS settings and it is configured to boot from CD first.

Did you save it to cmos before restarting your computer ? F10

Restart your computer

During the boot process you will see on the screen to press a certain key to enter setup usually the Delete or the F2 key

Press and hold that key during the boot up process to enter BIOS the using arrow key scroll down to advanced bios features press enter change your first boot device to cd,press escape then press f10 to save to cmos to restart

note this will erase you operating system you will have to have an operating system disk to load it onto you hard drive or create a partition to load another operating system

(note after you have loaded the operating system you should go back and change the first boot device to your failsafe or optimized defaults)
after windows has loaded

your computer will automatically restart it might restart 2 times one to finish the installation
the next will be because the operating system is loaded and will boot from your cd

during the boot process you will see on the screen to press a certain key to enter setup
Press and hold that key during the boot up process to enter BIOS using the arrow keys load

failsafe defaults or load optimized defaults press escape then press f10 to save to cmos to restart
otherwise it will keep booting from the cd /dvd drive

hope this helps

Boot from usb

Introduction UNetbootin allows you to create bootable Live USB drives for Ubuntu, Fedora, and other Linux distributions without burning a CD. It runs on Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X. You can either let UNetbootin download one of the many distributions supported out-of-the-box for you, or supply your own Linux .iso file if you've already downloaded one or your preferred distribution isn't on the list.
Requirements
  • Microsoft Windows 2000/XP/Vista/7, or Linux, or Mac OS X 10.5+. Note that resulting USB drives are bootable only on PCs (not on Macs).
  • Internet access for downloading a distro to install, or a pre-downloaded ISO file
Features UNetbootin can create a bootable Live USB drive, or it can make a "frugal install" on your local hard disk if you don't have a USB drive. It loads distributions either by downloading a ISO (CD image) files for you, or by using an ISO file you've already downloaded.

The current version has built-in support for automatically downloading and loading the following distributions, though installing other distributions is also supported:

Tip

Run Linux from a USB Hard Drive

Running linux from a USB hard drive is a great way to install Linux without affecting your Windows hard drive that is already on your computer!

First of all you will need to download the Linux operating system of choice. For me, I use Ubuntu Linux. You can download the ISO from the Ubuntu website.

Once you download the ISO image, you will need to burn it to a CD. Once this is done it is time to start installing!

*NOTE - I would remove the windows hard drive prior to installing. That was I can make sure I don't accidentally overwrite my Windows partition! You can put your hard drive back in the computer when you are done installing.

Place the CD/DVD into your drive and shut down your computer. Plug in your portable USB hard drive and turn the computer on. If your computer doesn't say "please press any key to boot from CD" then you will need to change your BIOS settings to boot from CD before booting from Hard drive.

Once the CD drive boots up you will be given the option to run Linux or to install it. Choose install, follow the prompts for networking/computer name etc and make sure you don't install it on your Windows hard drive partition!

Once Linux is installed on the portable hard drive all you will need to do is make sure you can boot your computer from a USB hard drive. This is done in the BIOS settings to choose your boot order.

Try to use the Driver for Windows 2003.
It has a Matrox VGA as I know. If you know which Matrox series you have, then Browse here for the Drives: Matrox Graphics Support. Make sure that you choose the Exact Driver software which suites the System.
Note: Not every product has the Driver Software for Windows XP.

I want to format scsi drives and configure raid0

You can either do this in the BIOS or (easier) just run a Linux installer (such as Ubuntu) and it will offer to do it for you when it sees Windows-formatted partitions.
