Look at your memory card. SD cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the metal contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card.

This error message indicates that the memory card is locked. The switch on the memory card is in the write-protect position. Reset the switch as shown on the camera screen.

SOURCE: Memory Card Requires Formatting

Hey B418,
Formatting will delete all your pictures on your camera or memory card. The camera might be prompting you to format because the the camera's memory is full. To avoid losing your pictures I would connect your camera to a computer, download your images to your computer first, and then format the memory.

Sincerely,
Allan

What is all the types of memory cards for a Kodak EasyShare c142

the lack of replies suggests you'd be better off putting a memory card into anything else other than a Kodak easyshare..... just look on here at the amount of Kodak & easyshare problems there are....... but for the record, "GOOGLE" mentions 32GB works fine and class 4 or over.

I just got the Kodak Easyshare c142 for Christmas, I have tried 3 new sd memory cards and the camera says they are all unreadable.

Your camera can support SD or SDHC memory cards to 32GB beyond that the camera Firmware can not read it. If you are under the 32GB which by the way is a huge massive unnecessary size for this camera the I'd expect two things are holding you up first is the protection switch on the side of the SD/SDHC card I'll include a diagram. This annoying little switch must be i the forward position to read and write to the card.

Also you need to format the memory card to the camera Formatting cleans the surface and prepare the card to work compatibly with the camera. Deleting pictures one by one does remove the picture but it also leaves a bit of information behind and Formatting removes all this unnecessary information. This also means that the memory card should be formatted each time you download pictures to the computer hard Drive

First diagram is the lock switch.

This is a screen shot of the formatting sequence found on page 33 of your manual
