I went to open the garage door and it would only open about 4 inches from the ground. If I push the button again it goes down, but then pops back up to the 4 inches. Help we are new homeowners and do not have anyone to ask. The garage door is a liftmaster.

Re: garage door will open to sensor level and stop
You might have a broken spring. Check on the a the header above the door there should be a tude with a drum on each end and 2 springs (maybe one) towards the center. se if one of the springs has a gap (1-2 inches) in it. If it does you will nedd to cal a door company in your area. I recommend you replace both springs. If you need to get you cars out some times you can help the operator to lift the door by lifting the door while the operator is lifting the door. Be very careful not to get your fingers in a pinch point and be sure to lower the door the same way.

I had a simular issue, except mine was that the previous owner decided to mess with all the settings and mounts and screwed everything up.
The problem isn't your force sensors its your downwards stopping sensor on the opposite side of the opener. For me I had to take the entire panel off and replace the sensor back in its holder, but try adjusting that sensor setting (clockwise goes down, counterclockwise goes up).
If that doesn't work then i dunno:)
Also set both force settings in between 0-1, for some reason with mine if i set it higher it would set them off....
After replacing the worm gear and main drive gear on my Craftsman 1/2 HP garage door opener I found that my door moved about 4 inches stopped and reversed the same distance. I checked all the settings and everything seems OK. What fixed the problem was I released the two allen set screws on the end of the motor shaft and pulled tha motor shaft toward me. When I replaced the black plastic cap that looks like a pill cap top on the end of the shaft this corrected the depth setting that cap rotated through the RPM sensor. I set the limit settings (up and down) on the side of the opener and reset the force pots marked (KC) to mid range.
the door now works. I hope this helps. I also checked and eliminated the door sensors by putting a box in the beem this inhibited any movemnet at all, so I knew it wasn't the door sensors as there was at least 4 incheds of movement prior to the box and nothing with the box.
