How do i connect a standard room stat to my combi boiler


Honeywell stats, esp the rounds ones, have multiple wiring diagrams that come with them including those for radiant which is a boiler hookup.
The stat has to go through the zone controller as your combi has a P1 zone priority set for the water heater and other P2-P? zones for heating loops. TACO will help you with this but it'd be really cool not to be so cheap you don't call a Tech for a Service Call to do a professional's job.

How can I make a thermostat connection?


Good morning Yakup.

The best way is to write down how the old t-stat was wired. If that's not available, the only way to determine for certain where each wire goes, is to check what the installer did at the terminals in your home comfort system. Please note the there is high voltage electric in each piece of equipment so if you decide to open up panels, there is always the risk of damaging the equipment or worse, injury or death if you are not a qualified service technician. However, typical color assignments are as follows:
R= (24v from heating appliance) Red
RC= (24v from cooling appliance) Red
These two are only separated when you have two different appliances providing seasonal comfort, like a boiler and an air handler. If you have a warm air furnace with an air conditioner or a heat pump attached then R+RC will have a jumper across them and only one RED wire will be landed there
W= (heat) White
Y= (cool) Yellow
G= (fan) Green
Those colors are pretty standard
The rest of the colors depend on availability in the jacket and are really up to the installer. You mentioned 7 wires but 8 conductors is more likely so I'm assuming the remaining colors are black, brown, blue, and orange.
I always use the following:
C= (common) Black
O/B= (reversing valve for a heat pump) Orange if the valve is energized for heat and Blue if the valve is energized for a/c.
Aux/E= (auxiliary or electric heat) Brown
L= I believe this is a diagnostic terminal for some systems with feedback data and is not used frequently.
After wiring there is some programing to do to set up your new thermostat to your type of system.

I have a hot water boiler with 3 zone valves and 2 circulation pumps. I see no relays wired to pumps. Pumps run constantly


Sounds like a lot of unknowns from your article. Here are some basic checks

- if they are the honeywell zone valves and you try to open them and get resistance than 9/10 times the t-stat is not calling for heat and the valve should be closed
-if stat is calling and wants heat zone valve lever should be free of resistance when moving it
- 15-20 psi is a little high but could be normal based on the size of your place and the temperature you are reading these pressures at
-with the pumps always running seems to me that the pumps are hard wired to a constant electrical source, if you want optimal control install a taco zone controller

Gas valve is made by Honeywell.
Whirlpool electronic control is version of Honeywell 'Icon' gas valve: There are several versions of this gas valve.

Time to call qualified service technician. And watch what that person does to learn about your water heater.
I assume you have Honeywell Icon gas valve. Honeywell makes different several model numbers.

Here is 'typical' Honeywell Icon gas valve service manual for Bradford White, that may or may not apply to your water heater. It shows testing for Icon and disassembly instructions, and error codes.

Gas water heaters today require yearly service that includes cleaning burner parts and combustion chamber, checking vent and air intake, electrical connections, testing gas valve, checking gas pressure, bleeding air out of gas line, etc. These are things you can learn to do by reading service manual, and making sure you have a spare water heater around to connect real quick if experiment goes wrong.
If Icon gas valve is problem, that control is modular and can be replaced without draining tank.

The water heater red light keeps flashing rapidly on my Powervent 2 model 41VRP40N. It is not producing hot water and when I read the manual it says it needs more heat. What does this mean. How do I fix...


There are many things to check. The single most important test is for 24V at the gas valve after the ignitor is supposed tp be on. 19 V or less and there is either a bad ground or the ingition control board has failed. (Wire ground problems are a high probablilty)

Here is what the book says:

PROBLEM #1 - HOT SURFACE IGNITOR DOES NOT GLOW RED

(Remember to wait for purge time, 17/34 seconds, on models so equipped).

Possible causes

A. No main power

B. Faulty transformer

C. Faulty thermostat

D. Faulty limit switch

E. Faulty blower interlock switch

F. Faulty hot surface ignitor

G. Faulty ignition control

Solution

Step #1

Perform normal system checks of main power, transformer, thermostat, limit

switch, blower interlock switch, and replace faulty component.

Step #2

With power on and thermostat set at its highest position, check voltage

between "TH" and "TR" on HS780 ignition control. If 24 volts is not present

check output at transformer. If no, replace transformer. If transformer

checks out OK look at other controls in the 24 volt circuit I.E.: thermostat,

limit switch, blower interlock switch. Check for 120 volts between "neut"

(L2) and "120" (L1). Check for 120 volts at the ignitor across "IGN" and

"IGN" terminals on the HS780 ignition module. If 120 volts is present,
replace ignitor. If no, replace the 780 series module

PROBLEM #2 - IGNITOR GLOWS RED BUT MAIN BURNER

WOULDN'T LIGHT

Possible causes

A. Improper ignitor alignment

B. Faulty ignition control

C. Faulty gas valve

D. High inlet gas pressure

E. Polarity reversed

F. No earth ground

Solution

Step #1

Check for availability of gas at gas valve. Make sure the manual valve

upstream of the gas valve and the gas valve are in the full on position. Also

make sure gas is being supplied to the system at the proper pressure, too

high will lock-up the valve.

Step #2

Check proper polarity of "NEUT" and "120" on the ignition control by reversing

the wires, if reversed gas valve will not open. If this does not solve the

problem, replace wires as they were.

Step #3

Check for proper ignitor position.

Step #4

Check for a good earth ground by using a meter connected between L1

and furnace chassis. Should read 120 volts, if no, check and/or repair ignition
ground wire or ignition control mounting screws.
CAUTION POLARITY MUST BE OBSERVED

Step #5

Check for 24 volts at the gas valve terminals; "1" and "2" on a 7200 series,

"M" and "C" on a 7100 series, "TH" and "TR" on a 7000 series. If yes,

check wire integrity or change the gas valve. If no, change the 780 series
ignition module.

That is pretty much all of the troubleshooting required.

I'm Harvey the Plumber,
First, Your question is if your thermostat is wired correctly!

Assuming that it is correct, a common problem that most people and plumbers overlook is correctly setting the heat anticipater on the thermostat.
Assuming that you have a gas central heating system, then you must simply look on the gas valve for the amp rating.
For instance,if the gas valve printing says .4 amps then set the heat anticipater for .4
It's common for the unit to turn on and off erratically (short cycling) when this setting is not correct.
If all you are worryied about is the wiring, you must look at the wireing diagram that came with the thermostat.
Further diagnoses would requie detailed information about your central heating system.
Or the alternative would be to have a hands on tech help you out.
