Question about Compaq Presario Notebook

Monitor / LCD screen unresponsive to computer.

I have a Compaq presario X1000 Pc notebook with windows XP installed.

When I boot up the computer, my LCD / Monitor does not seem to work. There is no Windows XP logo that shows up and no log-in screen is seen, just black! There is a small band (perhaps a pixel in width) on the very bottom of the screen that is the colour of the log-in screen, and when I do login (using shortcut keys) the band changes to the XP colour theme I have.
All the key lights are functional (Caps lock, CD drive working light, On light, Battery power light). The backlight is functional and I'm fairly certain there is no issue with the computer itself as I can log in using shortcut keys (I can hear the music that announces a log in). But I can't see anything!! Please help. My daughter had similar problem. Compaq Presario R3000 Notebook..She was typing and it went to blue screen of death, then after trying to restart it a few times, it went black...tried several restarts still black...We are on my pc (the exact same machine) and were looking in the help and support section now...She has left the machine running for this entire time and now she just went back to it and restarted it AGAIN and the screen came back on!! She is in safe mode now checking things seeing if there is anything that looks like it is out of order.
I was thinking that maybe the fan is slowing up. It overheated something...because she almost always uses her computer on her bed which does not allow for good air flow. Any thoughts on this? Should we look to replace the fan or video card?
She said it seems completely normal now...

Most laptops have vents on the bottom of the laptop and if these are restricted or blocked the CPU will overheat and a thermal shutdown will occur. The laptop will not boot up again until the CPU has cooled down, continual use of the laptop this way will lead to a breakdown of the CPU.
I suggest that the laptop be placed on a hard flat surface on the bed (better still on a desk and your daughter will be in a proper sitting posture position - no good for her back with the laptop in bed) to ensure good air flow to the laptop.

I would go to Compaq.s website. There you can look up youe model and see if it is one of the machines they are doing one time free repairs on. I just shipped out my wife's HP today. Seems there are issues with several compaqs and HP note books. Good Luck

Sounds like the LCD driver has become corrupted....if it only happens on boot then the bios may need to be updated...if it's happening all the time them the windows drivers may need updating

Black screen after boot up.

Try pressing FN and F7 to get the video back on your PC's screen.
If that do not work, you could have a defective LCD display or the back lights might be defective as well.

I have a compaq presario 1000 series portable computer ... from 1996! Just want to use it for display of photos for exhibits etc. haven't opened it since 2005 and screen is empty. Lithium Battery still...

You are better off putting it out to pasture.
If you are simply going to show photos, the time/costs of installing a new OS and memory to run what you want to do...on top of the cost of running the machine (Electricity bill)
you are better off buying a separate photo viewer machine..they are nice, compact, and are not energy hogs like the 1000 series

How to install xp

  1. Place the Windows XP installation disk in your Compaq Presario notebook's CD or DVD drive, and restart the computer. Press any key on your keyboard when prompted.
  2. Press the "Enter" button on your keyboard when you are brought to the "Welcome to Setup" window. Read the XP license terms and tap the "F8" key to verify that you have read and agree to them.
  3. Select the hard disk drive on which you wish to install the Windows XP operating system. Use the arrow keys on your keyboard to toggle between options.
  4. Press the "Enter" key after highlighting the location where you would like to install XP. Windows XP will begin copying installation files to your computer. XP will restart your computer automatically upon finishing.
  5. Select the region you reside in and your primary language in the window that appears after your computer restarts. Type in your name and the organization your computer is affiliated with (if any).
  6. Enter the 25-character product key that was included with the Windows XP installation CD. Click the "Next" button to continue. Type in a name for the computer and a password for the administrative account.
  7. Choose your time, time zone, and the correct date in the following window, and click "Next" to continue. Select "Typical settings" on the "Network Settings" screen and hit the "Next" button.
  8. Enter a workgroup name if your Compaq Presario CQ50 notebook PC is a part of a connected network of computers (such as at an office), and click "Next" to proceed. Windows will restart and bring you to a "Welcome" screen, completing the installation of XP on your Compaq Presario CQ50 notebook PC.

BSoD, Garbled Screen, Boot Failure.

If you are getting garbage on the screen before windows tries to load the laptop probably has a bad motherboard.

It's possibly only the video output is going bad on it, try hooking it to an external monitor and see if you get the same weird stuff on that screen.

Good luck, let me know how it goes

Monitor / LCD screen unresponsive to computer.

From what you've told us, It sounds like your LCD screen. The first thing to do is to to beg, borrow or steal a desktop monitor and plug it in to the proper port on the laptop. Turn it on and bring the system up. If this works, you can be pretty sure that you have nailed the problem. Once you've confirmed the problem, you might want to try to open it up to check the LCD cable and connector. Disconnect and reseat the connector and look for any cuts or abrasion on the LCD cable. If these actions don't get the display working, you'll probably need a new LCD. If you need more help on this, just let me know.
By the way, you did a very good job of describing the problem. Kudos to you...
