Question about Compaq Presario Notebook
I have a Compaq presario X1000 Pc notebook with windows XP installed.
When I boot up the computer, my LCD / Monitor does not seem to work. There is no Windows XP logo that shows up and no log-in screen is seen, just black! There is a small band (perhaps a pixel in width) on the very bottom of the screen that is the colour of the log-in screen, and when I do login (using shortcut keys) the band changes to the XP colour theme I have.
All the key lights are functional (Caps lock, CD drive working light, On light, Battery power light). The backlight is functional and I'm fairly certain there is no issue with the computer itself as I can log in using shortcut keys (I can hear the music that announces a log in). But I can't see anything!! Please help. My daughter had similar problem. Compaq Presario R3000 Notebook..She was typing and it went to blue screen of death, then after trying to restart it a few times, it went black...tried several restarts still black...We are on my pc (the exact same machine) and were looking in the help and support section now...She has left the machine running for this entire time and now she just went back to it and restarted it AGAIN and the screen came back on!! She is in safe mode now checking things seeing if there is anything that looks like it is out of order.
I was thinking that maybe the fan is slowing up. It overheated something...because she almost always uses her computer on her bed which does not allow for good air flow. Any thoughts on this? Should we look to replace the fan or video card?
She said it seems completely normal now...
Most laptops have vents on the bottom of the laptop and if these are restricted or blocked the CPU will overheat and a thermal shutdown will occur. The laptop will not boot up again until the CPU has cooled down, continual use of the laptop this way will lead to a breakdown of the CPU.
I suggest that the laptop be placed on a hard flat surface on the bed (better still on a desk and your daughter will be in a proper sitting posture position - no good for her back with the laptop in bed) to ensure good air flow to the laptop.

I would go to Compaq.s website. There you can look up youe model and see if it is one of the machines they are doing one time free repairs on. I just shipped out my wife's HP today. Seems there are issues with several compaqs and HP note books. Good Luck
