The new ps3's won't play ps2 games. the only ones I know of are the ones that came out when ps3 first came out. you will have to go to the following website http://www.us.playstation.com
there they will give you a list of models that will possibly be compatible with ps2 games. i bought the Ps3 with the same idea in mind. The sales clerk even said thay would play ps2 games. Because his does. But he got one of the first ps3's that ever hit the market also. the ps3 will play some ps1 games. There is no patch for it. so you may have to leep your ps2 system after all. i had to.

you have to push the ps button on the controller again after the system loads the video game, for some reason (i assume compatability issues) the system breaks connection with the controller when it loads the ps2 discs. If this doesnt help get back with me
ps2 games are ment to be only played at ps2 and ps3 games are only ment to be played at ps3.
even though you might think that ps3 is a higher version of ps2 so ps3 should play the old games but its not like that.
when a ps2 game is developed, it is made to only run on a ps2 platform and nothing else. its programed in such a way, that is why it will not run in a ps3 platform. its the same thing l;ike you cannot play a XBOX360 game on a ps3 platform cause the game company has made it not to run on other consoles. hope it solves your problem.
The Playstation (R) 3 has most likely been patched. I find it knocks back not only Action Replay but XPLODER also (The EU version of Gameshark) both for PS2 it is likely that SONY has blocked it out to stop consumers playing region locked dvd movies. So if you in UK you can only play Region 2 PAL dvd's, if you in the us, you can only play Region 1 NTSC dvds. If in AUS, you can only play Region 4 Dvd Disc....etc.... AR Max had a feature to bypass this problem, thus why sony has probably patched against it. As for a solution I am also searching for one, truth be told, I don't think there is one.
You should boot up your codes on your PS2, then the game.
Save your game.
Then copy your save game to your PS3.
The same problem happened to me yesterday, i was playing GTA IV then it suddenly stopped reading, and now i have a real hard time making one ps3 game work...the ps2 and psONE games work fine, but the ps3 ones dont load or take real hard work to make them load.
Ps3 supports over 1000 ps1 and ps2 titles. Make sure you hook your ps3 up to the internet and download the latest firmware updates.
Odds are your system will be able to play all or most of your ps2 games once you update the ps3 online.
Some games won't be supported since they are region specific. And if it's a PS2 game then it may not have the patch needed to play it. Here in the states about 200 PS1 and PS2 games are not recognized by the PS3. And if it's not an American region game, then we have to have a mod chip for it to work.
