This image should help you get an id as to where your harddrive is located.

Copy past into your browser windows if the link is broken.

If your trying to replace your hard drive, most newer laptops make this easy by placing the drive bay on the bottom of your computer.

Close the monitor and flip your laptop over. If your laptop allows you to replace your harddrive easily there should be a cover, screwed into the bottom with a symbol that indicates which one is the hard drive. To give you an example, mine is indicated by 3 disks overlaying each other.

Hi I have an IBM thinkpad R51, type 2887 model AVG and I need to purchase and replace Harddrive ? What type of Harddrive do I need ?

if your gonna replace your hard drive anyway, just take the old one out and tap it forcefully, better still take it apart and clean it of dust etc and gently micro-lubricate its moving parts see if you can get it working again--replace with same spec model--consult manufacturers site/manual for correct item.--good luck!

Please Start

It is reaching POST but not boot so I would check your harddrive is ok. Search online for a free harddrive diagnostic such as Seatools and run that.
See if it is recognised in BIOS, when it boots to the IBM screen tap F2 (or whatever button takes you to BIOS setup) and under the boot section see if your HDD is listed.

Check your harddrive is connected properly, if it is clicking or making any strange noises it may be damaged.
Hope this helps,

New harddrive

Check the connections and the drive settings (jumpers) to make sure its set to "Master, Stand alone". The IBM PC's autodetect's the HDD installed so if it doesn't read the HDD, there is a hardware problem.
Maybe is the Thinkpad interface faulty and the HDD you replaced is fine.

Format the harddrive and install an Operating System of your choice.
