Question about Sony Computers & Internet

1 Answer

Sony Vaio model no. VGN-NW20SF and the touchpad L.H. button has broken.

Does anybody have any advice on gaining access (behind motherboard etc) to replace this faulty part . I have tried to google the service manual and vids on youtube but proved fruitless. Any assistance would be gratefully appreciated.

You ARE using an ESD wrist strap, and have it's alligator clip attached to a good ground source, correct?

Otherwise you are going to Static shock your laptop, and can use it for a Doorstop.
(Or conversation piece,
"Hey what's that Stewart?" "Oh that was an attempt to repair an old VAIO I had." )

Average price is around $3 to $6. One example,

I connect to an unpainted surface, of the metal frame of an open, empty desktop computer case.
You can also set a large metal serving tray (Unpainted), on the TABLE you are working on, and connect to it.
Or a large metal knickknack (Unpainted)

Use a multi-compartment container for the various screws you will remove.
Label each compartment for the area the screw/s come out of.
(You can use a clean egg carton if you need to)

SOME screws look VERY similar to other screws.
Advise DO NOT mix them up.
(Especially since there is no free Service Manual)

Let's look at some of the casing parts, to familiarize you,

Get the Sony part number off of the Touchpad, to look up a replacement.

Thanks for the rating! Yes, I know the above information may seem like a puzzle, but it does detail critical info dealing with the NW models specifically. Laptops are made by three main manufacturers. Quanta, Compal, and Wistron. They are the main manufacturers who HP, Compaq, Acer, Gateway, eMachines, Dell, etc, buy from; As such the disassembly doesn't really vary all that much. Usually it's the Switch Cover, Keyboard, Display Assembly, Palm Rest Cover, and you're in. Removal of an entire Base Enclosure is more of a rarity. Therefore I would like you to look at various other models being disassembled, and pictorial guide information; After a few laptops of various manufacurers you really don't need a service manual. Just specifications. Regards, joecoolvette

One more thing, and I'll stop. Keyboard Cable motherboard connector. The Keyboard Cable stays attached to the Keyboard. It removes from the motherboard's connector. The Keyboard Cable is a Flat Flex Cable. It has NO connector on the end. The 'flat bar contact strips' at the end are aligned, with the contact pins of the motherboard connector. The direction of the cable MUST go back in the same direction it was originally. You may wish to make a mark on one side of the cable, and a matching mark on one side of the motherboard connector. The motherboard connector is a type of ZIF connector. Zero Insertion Force. It is rectangular in shape, and composed of two pieces, but does NOT come completely apart. The bottom part is larger of the two, and is the BODY. The top smaller piece is the Locking Bar. There are three styles of Locking Bar used. Only two prevail to my knowledge. IF, the Locking Bar comes off of the Body; either the Body is broken, or the Locking Bar. This means MOTHERBOARD REPLACEMENT, and why I am being so detailed. 1) This style slides. Slides towards the LCD screen, and ONLY about 2mm. (A little more than 1/16th of an Inch) 2) The second style flips up. Up to a straight up position, or said as 90 degrees. 1a) 1b) 2a) 2b)

The ac power plug was broken loose on my sony vaio vgn fw140e and finally the laptop failed to power up. I'm pretty sure the power adapter came loose from the mother board . I just don't know how to fix...

1. Test power adapter for output voltage. Bend the power cable in various directions while doing this to be sure that there is no broken conductors in the cable.
2. If power adapter is Ok, connect it & see if the power LED on the laptop will glow when you jiggle the power connector in various directions. If yes, then the DC jack might be loose or damaged, & need to be either re-soldered or replaced.
3. If not, then disassemble the laptop. Remove any components that attach to the laptop's motherboard first (e.g. battery, hard drive, RAM, wireless card, optical drive, ... etc.)
4. Next, remove the keyboard & the LCD screen.
5. Finally, unscrew all screws that hold the upper cover & lower cover together so that you could gain access to the motherboard.
6. Inspect the solder points connecting the DC jack to the motherboard. Make sure that none of them is loose. If any, re-solder them.
7. Inspect the center pin in the DC jack. Make sure that it is not broken or loose. If it is, then you might need to replace the DC jack.
8. When you are done, re-assemble back the laptop.

Im in Vietnam and i have a Sony vaio VGN-CS215j/w but the touch sensor of volum can not use. Pls help me repair it!

The plus (+) and minus (-) volume control buttons on the touch sensor bar above the keyboard may not work properly if the touchpad driver is not installed properly.

The other buttons on the touch sensor bar, such as the play, forward, or rewind buttons, may still work properly.
To resolve the issue, download and install the original Synaptics® Touchpad Driver (or an updated version of that driver, if available) from the Drivers & Software link on this page.
