When you start up your computer press f8 a menu will come up select Last know configuration that worked press enter.see if that works. If not press f8 again and select safe mode press enter see if it will boot to safe mode.if it boots go to my computer right click your boot drive select double click tools then click check now button a menu will come up tick automatic repair then start repair. It will ask you to shedule a repair click ok when you restart it will check and repair your hard drive. If this does not work you can put your operating system disk in your drive and boot to it and click repair and follow the on screen instructions

If you have enough space on your hard drive you can boot to your operating system disk and reinstall your operating system.do not format hard drive and do not delete your current operating system.setup should give option to keep your current operating system.if you want to access whats on you hard drive. It will make a folder called old windows and every thing that was on the hard drive will be there. If it is vista or windows 7 you may have to change permissions to access the some folders.before reinstalling you could try to boot to operating system disk go to repair disk and see if it will let you restore windows to an earlier time.

It sounds like your onboard graphics has possibly failed. If you have an additional monitor to connect to it you can see if the additional video gives any video. If it doesn't during startup then you have to replace the system board.

Usually this happens when the vista boot loader fails. During boot up, keep tapping F8 and then select Disable Automatic Restart... and get the stop error code which usually starts with 0x

You can restore your system in your safe mode.
To use System Restore to restore Windows XP to a previous state, follow these steps:

  1. Log on to Windows as Administrator.
  2. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore. System Restore starts.
  3. On the Welcome to System Restore page, click Restore my computer to an earlier time (if it is not already selected), and then click Next.
  4. On the Select a Restore Point page, click the most recent system restore point in the On this list, click a restore point list, and then click Next.

Note A System Restore message may appear that lists configuration changes that System Restore will make. Click OK.
  5. On the Confirm Restore Point Selection page, click Next. System Restore restores the previous Windows XP configuration, and then restarts the computer.
  6. Log on to the computer as Administrator. The System Restore Restoration Complete page is displayed.
  7. Click OK.
If you successfully restored your computer to a previous state, and the computer is performing as it should be, you are finished.

Why a black screen on xps l701x w7 i7 1.73

Black screen - no flashing white cursor in the upper left corner - no picture at all, i.e. the initial Dell start-up screen doesn't show up either:
- LCD is dead or isn't getting a signal - not an easy fix; or
- the LCD isn't being sent a signal - holding down the function [Fn] key and press display Function key to toggle through its settings (LCD panel only, Rear VGA output only, both LCD and VGA output)

Black screen - flashing white cursor in the upper left corner - the screen goes black after the windows loading screens come up but before the windows login screen comes up - it is probably a windows video driver problem. Try starting in Windows Safe Mode with VGA. Press [F8] after the Dell startup screen disappears to access the windows startup menu

Have you upgraded the OS? At boot start tapping the F-2 key, do not wait for the Dell screen. Take a look at this forum:http://www.computing.net/answers/windows-95/dell-s-bios-startup-screen/85976.html

Put the Windows disk in and repair the drivers. Should be easy follow on screen instructions, if not use the DELL OEM disk to start and do repair. I have a Dell Inspirion it did this b/c of a virus. I just did a repair WIN7 and all is good now.

You may need to reload windows on the hard drive. However try this first: reboot the system. Tap F8 to get to the system menu. Go to Safe mode and see if windows will load from there. If it does- try System restore to a point before the looping issue started. If it still loops, tap F12 at the Dell screen, and select the image to restore the system (reload to factory default). If you do not have that option, you will need the install media that came with your Laptop to reinstall the operating system entirely. If you do not have the drivers disk for your system- you will need to go to Support.Dell.com, enter in the service tag of your system, and download the drivers for your system.

Good luck! Also, as a reminder: Use your burner or an external hard-drive to backup your college work. Nothing makes you hate life more than having to retype a 20page paper from your edited rough draft and outline due to a system crash or virus! (personal experience. History paper.)

On start up the screen goes black . As startup is progressing, the screen shows the dell logo and backgroun, and sometimes a log on query, but , after a few minutes the screen goes to black.

Hi
You probably have or had a virus destroy Windows start up files or you have a bad sector under the start up files. You may be able to slave the hard drive to another system to backup your data, assuming there are no bad sectors. Once you are satisfied that you have all your data then a reformat and operating system restore should solve the problems. If you find bad sectors though, just replace the drive.
