Question about Salter 2001 electronic kitchen scale

Open Question

My salter 2001 kitchen scale displays a little blinking battery in the upper left hand corner of the display every time I turn it on. I changed the batteries (correctly) and it still happens. Once in a while it will show a weight readout, but then suddenly it reverts back to the blinking battery icon.

SOURCE: I changed the battery on bathroom scale Salter 987

I had the same problem with my Salter 987 scale. Pull the battery out for about 10 seconds and put it back in. Then push the scale once so it turns on. After the blinking stops, push it once more. The scale will now zero itself. After the scale has zero'd itself it may turn off after a brief moment. It's now ready to use normally. If you're standing on the scale when it's trying to calibrate to zero, it will assume your weight is zero. Don't stand on the scale after replacing the battery untill you first complete the steps listed above.

'out 2' error message shows on a brand new Salter Disc Electronic scale.

Below is a solution for the "Out2" error on the Salter scales.

I have a Salter Model 1400. It was dropped and started to display the "out2" error on the LCD display. I looked for solutions on-line but could not find anything which showed a solution. With no solution in hand I figured I would at least try to find out if my scale was salvageable. I removed the screws, there are two below the 9V battery, two under the footpads, two under the "model sticker", and two larger screws holding the scale plate to the base. After all the screws are successsfull removed, the case of the scale comes apart easily. I started looking at the small circuit board and looked for damage, and also tried several things, turned on and off the unit while it was apart but still saw the "out2" error. I then removed the circuit board, there are many screws holding it down. Looking at the LCD display, I noticed that there must be proper contact between the LCD display and the copper contacts on the circuit board, or nothing is displayed. Perhaps, "out2" is an indication that it can not display "out" anything because after it was dropped the LCD display moved enough that it no longer aligned with the contacts on the circuit board. I noticed that there is quite a bit of "play" or area of movement around the LCD display and the case. There were no cracks or damage so I assume that the loose LCD display is common even with a scale that was not dropped. I was able to align the LCD display, by moving it several times and realized that after pressing the ON button, I no longer saw the out2 error. So I decided to put something in between the LCD display and the case so that the LCD display would not move and therefore would align. It took some playing around, but I eventually took a very small piece of papertowl, about the size of my thumbnail and rolled it up and placed it between the LCD display so it made the LCD display snug and would no longer move around. I screwed on the circuit board, and voila, no more out2 error! It started working perfectly.

Salter 9001 bathroom scale stopped working

Hi Pete. I don't keep receipts either : ^ )
No that I am done commeserating, try this. Remove the batteries. Use the eraser end of a common pencil to scrub and clean the battery contacts inside the battery compartment. Also pull the contacts a little closer to the surface if you can. Then reinstall the batteries and you may be up and running.
Please rate my answer as verey helpful thanks. Joe

REPAIRING DIGITAL DISPLAY SCALE -- SALTER BRAND WITH ERROR MESSAGE, AND EVENTUALLY NO DISPLAY AT ALL
---
I managed to fix a Salter digital display bathroom scale I had bought for my mom by removing dust from the area that turns it on -- the design fit perfectly with her decor so she didn`t want it replaced with a different style.
MODEL: It was model 910 but I imagine the fix will work with other similar models.
PROBLEM: The scale had been working only occasionally for many weeks and was hard to turn on -- my mom said it no longer made the little click sound when she pressed it with her foot to turn it on. Finally it gave an error display and stopped working entirely with no display at all -- not even the dashes to indicate it was getting any power from the battery.
SOLUTION: When changing the battery and cleaning out its compartment failed, I suspected that maybe dust had gotten into another area -- the part that turns it on -- on this scale they`re little silver discs under the glass that press into the base (the dust would explain the lack of the usual metallic click sound and the lack of contact to switch it on). The area is not very accessible, so I used a high power vacuum with crevice attachment in my left hand, while loosening the dust with a duster/paintbrush in my right. The trick was to find the right duster and then work both tools around each disc coming at the same point from different angles. The first time I used a small duster with man-made materials (not feathers) and tried to push it into the crevice so that at least some bristles turned the corner down into the base -- the vacuum was strong enough to pull any loose dust out. This first cleaning went well enough to get the display back on when I tried it -- back to the error message anyway, but I knew I was on the right track. The second time I used a skinny fine detail number 1 paint brush (similar to the ones in a child`s paint set) to loosen the dirt while using the vacuum -- I pushed horizontally in toward the disc, and then twirled it back and forth so that the bristles splayed and the lower half of them curved down into the crevice. This worked well and afterwards the scale turned on and went to 00 and read my weight. A third cleaning with the vacuum and paint brush even brought back the little "click" sound and my mom says that since fixing it the scale works better now than it has in a couple years.
Hope this repair works for you. All in all it took less time than it would to find contact info to call/e-mail for a return/replacement, wrap/box/label it, and take it to the post office -- not to mention saving shipping charges.
