If you have a ohm meter you go in your freezer section and take the back panel off and if it is still frozen up you can test your defrost t-stat it is a round thermostat on top of the coils with 2 wires coming out of it just cut your wires while it is still on the icey coil and test it if no ohms it is bad if there is ohms then reconnect the wires and ohm out your heater more then likely it is your thermostat

My freezer works fine but the refrigerator part won't cool. What can I do?

Hello,

The leading cause of the refrig.not working while the freezer does is because the freezer is not automatically defrosting as its supposed to,do you see frost build up on the back wall inside the freezer?? if yes their is frost build up in=side of the freezer its not defrosting.

This tip i wrote covers what to check to see why its not defrosting.

I have a GE Side by side Fridge with model #TFX27PFSM WW and the coils were completely frozen. I used the hair dryer on them and thawed them out. As soon as I plugged the fridge back in, they immediately...

Hello,

Its normal for the evaperator coil in the freezer to have frost on it that is a sign of a heallthy good working compressor...WHEN IT BUILDS UP SO THICK their is no gaps in the coil and its just one huge iceblock that is where the problem lays. Thier is a automatic defrost system that is supposed to periodically come on and melt the frost and a component from it has failed allowing the frost to build up so thick it has restricted airflow through it.

The most probable problem is going to be a bad defrost heater it by far is the leading problem when a GE brand ref.doesnt automatically defrost.

This tip i wrote explains how to check and see why its not automatically defrosting

Have a GE tfx28ppdabb and the frig side gets hot, defrosted the freezer but the problem comes back after a week

Is it an automatic self defrosting unit? If so, defrosting the freezer will cure your problem temporarily. When the defrost timer fails to defrost automatically, ice builds up again and plugs the chute between the freezer and the fridge and the fridge gets hot.....If this action is repeatable,(meaning you can manually defrost but it only lasts a few days) then for some reason, the automatic defrost timer is not working. It's either the timer itself or one of the fuses.....there is always the chance that the thermostat, which tells the timer when to turn on and off, is also defective, but most of the time, the defrost timer is the culprit. Check the fuses first, then the defrost timer.

My GE fridge is leaking water on the freezer side

Hi,

This would be due to the defrost drain being clogged. The automatic defrost cycle melts the frost on the evaporator every few hours and the water from that is suppose to flow down a drain tube, if the drain becomes restricted the water will leak out the freezer door. Here is a link to some instructions I put together on how to clean it out.

GE Profile - fridge not cooling

If freezer is icing up, you might have a defrost problem. Frost free models have a heating element that is controlled by a timer to automatically defrost ice, defrost timer turns on defrost heating element every 12 hours to melt ice in freezer and allow good air flow.
You can test defrost element with an ohm meter(located inside freezer coils-will have two wires going to a plug connection), if OK replace defrost timer (located in various places depending on make and model

GE PROFILE FREEZER FAN STAYS OFF TOO LONG..ITEMS DEFROSTING

The fan stops during the whole defrost cycle, there is a bi metal control that determines the length of time the heater stays on. This could be the problem, if the heater stays on for the time that is allowed by the defrost timer it will get too warm in the freezer. the bi metal is located on the evaporator.

GE PCG23NHMF side by side fridge freezer - stopped cooling

Although this machine is supposed to be frost-free (i.e. automatic defrost), there was a build up of frost. We manually defrosted the machine, then restarted it - the noise has stopped and the freezer and fridge are now working. However, this may be a temporary solution.

Freezer

If the freezer is in defrost then the freezer fan should be off. Only on the electronic will the freezer fan come on in defrost but the freezer door has to be held open for 3 min before the fan comes on
