My guess is that your sons 360 is used and was refurbished. The same thing happened to mine but my solution is to return it if you have the reciept.

Sony Optiarc AD7260S shows in explorer, but does not detect CD/DVD

When you insert the disk, can you hear the motor spinning the disk?
If not- the Nidec drive motor failed. It may still be under warranty or you can try to replace just the motor if that is the case.

If you are hearing it spin, something on the pickup may have failed.

Will it play an audio CD? If so, the DVD pickup failed.

All of a sudden my disk and dvd movies will no longer pop up when i put then in the disk holder and push them in nothing happens i can hear the disk spinning for a few seconds and then it stops but nothing...

Insert a disk. Wait for the disk-spinning to stop.
Open "My Computer".
Double-click the icon for the CD/DVD drive, to see if Windows can read anything from the disk.

When i put a dvd in you can hear the dish spin then it says to insert disk, when the disk is in there.

In most cases when the CD does not play it is possible that the optical head is a suspect. Sometimes it might pick up ordinary audio CD but will not play other formats. This indicates that the optical head is weak and so there is no detection or scanning of the CD . If the optical is working the tracks will be read immediately but with no scanning the laser head can be defective.
Sometimes certain cleaner disks will not be tracked to run for cleaning as it will not be read and so will reject. Hence it is ideal to manually clean the laser head eye using a cleaning swap /cotton bud with gentle pressure on the lens eye.
If there is no result then watch if the CD spins or tries to spin. If so the board seems to work unless a test is taken on the main board but the possibility of a defective optical head can be the suspected fault.
If any of the above seems otherwise we must recheck with possibilities of a malfunction of the main processor board

I am trying get to firmware for my samsung sc- 140b. My cdrom can't read a cdrom and. i can't hear nothing.

If you insert a disk, and you don't hear it "spin" the disk, then the motor that spins the disks has FAILED. Replace the CD-ROM drive -- it's less expensive than paying a technician to try to repair it.

My son's psp (the older fat version) has stopped reading discs

Not sure is this actual PSP or play station. If it is Play station It is very possible that there is problem with laser that reads disks. Try to by PSP cleaner and run it and this might fix the issue.

Hp dvd/rw does not read discs

If the CD or DVD disks you inserted work in some other reader, then your reader is the problem -- even though it is properly connected to your computer, and Windows has the correct device-drivers, it is the "hardware" that is the problem.

When you insert a disk, rotate it to some position, i.e., top-lettering goes in first, and close the drawer. Do you hear the drive start to spin the disk? Open the drawer. Is the disk in the same (non-rotated) position? If so, then the motor that spins the disk is the problem. If the disk does spin, but nothing happens, then it is the "laser" part of the mechanics that is not working.

Replace it.

Dvd player wont read disk

If when you insert the disk you hear a whirring and clicking noise, CD spins, and does not read, then that is a problem with the DVD lens.

The DVD lens try to focus on the DVD track, by moving lens pickup and spinning the disk, but cannot read the tracks because the lens is dirty or defective.

Try first cleaning the lens with a DVD cleaner disk. And also if you can see the lens from the outside try blowing some canned air on it.

If this still does not help, then the lens pickup may be faulty, in this case you often replace the whole DVD drive unit inside the DVD player.
