From others I've worked on it appears that some solder joints on the volume control assby have "let go".
There are a few places that stock Marantz parts online.
Typically ,this isnt a consumer serviceable issue.
I can possibly suggest a repair place depending on where you are.

Hope that helps.

I got this from one of the guys on a stereo blog:

One possibility is Rocky Mountain Vintage Audio, run by Wayne Powell.

He's in the SW area on Lowell near Belleview. He is very

knowledgeable but not cheap. Generally you will pay 1/2 the unit's

retail value for repair. But it will get done. Great guy.

Also Intrinsic Sound on Broadway in Denver.

I have a Marantz turntable, a Marantz CD player, an Eltax tape player and a Marantz amplifier with two Cambridge speakers, how do I assemble them into a stack system please ? Thank you

All the sources, turntable, CD player and tape unit have an output. These should go in the input of the amplifier with the same name. Then only the Tape player, could have an input, for recording music or whatever. For that input, your amplifier should have an tape out. All these should be connected with cables with tulip plugs, like these.

Use the white for left on everything and red for right.
If one of the devices as a different connector, find a cable for audio, with on one end the tulip plugs and on the other end the fitting plug.
Then the output of the power amplifier it should say output or LS, can be connected with 2 wires going to the speakers.
For this the same counts, although it is difficult to see when you use electrical wires in one colour. What comes out red on he amp, should go on the same screw connector on the speaker. Just to avoid one speaker being out of phase. It will work, but could sound a little strange when the speakers are out of phase.
With the correct model names added, perhaps we could have given a more accurate answer.

Please don't test the system or switch on, with the volume button to the max. Don't switch anything on an amplifier when the volume is high, or the setting is high. A short increase of the volume, during switching can, and has very often destroy(ed) the speakers.

How to hook a carver TFM 45 to a Marantz AV 8003 pre amp with Bose 901 speakers thank you very much

The output of the Marantz will go to the input of the Carver. The Bose EQ has to go into a Tape Monitor on the Marantz, or, you can connect the Marantz output to the Bose line in(not tape in). The line output of the Bose, to the Carver input.

Is there anything else I'm missing?

Do you mean just crackling generally or it crackles when you turn it up or down? I have a Marantz PM350, old but still great performance, and I periodically take the volume knob off and spray down the hole with a cleaner/lubricant spray. This does the trick!

My marantz stereo amplifier PM420 is having a problem of uncontrolled volume and distorted sound output..when putting on higher volume its switch relay on on its main amp. section switch off. Pls help.tnx

The part of the amp you switch in (to get more power) has failed, its probably only on the left or right channel, not both. Its either a pro-repair (expensive) or replace or live-with-it

Poor sound from 1 channel on a PM 66 SE Special Edition. Changed speaker and wire, no change. The sound is muffled and lower in volume. Same happens when tuner is on, so must be amplifier. Hope you can...

My 1st thought would be a broken contact or 2 inside on the main volume control... Is the balance set to middle?
Is it the same with headphones?

Marantz 2220B with Sound Problem at Half volume

The most likely cause of this is some DC current working its way through the system. WIthout taking some measurements, it will be difficult to confirm this though. This should not be an expensive repair. Figure on $20 or so for parts (capacitors mostly).

Marantz SR5600 receiver troubleshooting.

Ya, it sound like you just blowed the output on one of the stages, I would disconect the speakers to see if the problem still is there, second open the top cover, there should be about 7 fuses check for a blowed one, last hope it's not an output, if you never worked on an amp, you will cause more problem.
Hope this help
