HARDDRIVE ERROR ON SONY RDRHXD860 DVD RECORDER

Hi, I formatted a 500 gb sata harddrive and put it in the machine but it came up with "harddrive error " I thought maybe it does not like being formatted on a nfts based operating system. so using seagates software i filled the harddrive with zero's and it still comes up with harddrive error. can anyone help. thanks john

Do you have the remote or have downloaded the file to program a remote for it to work on the dvd recorder? If not I believe this will not work as it has different keys that the unit does not have on it.

the remote in the P.D.F file is different to mine. I delayed replying because I e-mailed Sony. today I got a reply: not interested, no support out side the guarrentee or upgrades. I did try connecting the harddrive to the computer and copying but it comes up as unallocated space

Have you considered checking your DVD writer? Also, you might already have a faulty hard disk drive.
You can try any of the following:
1. Double check to see if your Windows 7 installation disk is dirty (clean it using a lint free cloth) or has many scratches. (Your DVD reader/writer would really have a hard time reading scratched disks.)
2. Borrow another DVD-ROM from a friend and use it to install Windows 7 on your computer's C drive.
3. Check to see if ALL cables are properly connected. i.e. SATA, power cables, etc.
4. You could also try to make your 500 GB HDD as a slave drive so that you can backup your files to another media if it works. (Backup to another external hard disk drive, burn it to DVD's, etc.)
5. LISTEN carefully if your hard drive makes unusual noises like unusual clicking, bumping, and/or scratching sound inside your hard disk drive. If it does and as a last resort, replace your hard disk drive.

It has to have SATA Hard Drive Connector DFHS22FR685, if you have this then I would try to format the hard drive to what your operating system is using, either NFTS or FAT32. The drive may not be properly formated for your system.

Re: A Disk Read Error Occured. Press CTRL ALT DEL to restart

1 - Have you tried a different IDE cable?
If not give it a go and do a repair if needed again!

2 - You may have a corrupt MBR (master boot record)!! You will need to reformat and do Fdisk /mbr to delete the master boot record!! Save all data first as this will not allow you to access any of your data as all file location addresses are located in the MBR!!

3 - Your harddrive may have a bad sector get a zerofill tool(low level formatting tool)!! This will rewrite you HD's sectors putting them back to factory spec's!! Maxtors is called Maxblast you can get it from thier site!!

4 - or it could be a defective drive, but most read errors are due ot corrupt MBR or a bad sector!! Good Luck D.i.l.i.p
