I looked up the machine and found this threading diagram

Here is a good place for other free solutions, as well as if you need parts for your vintage machine.

Does the length on the display change or is it as if the buttons are not even working. If the touch pad is malfunctioning you will probably find other buttons not working. Try all of the buttons and see if others do not work. If this is the case, the keypad can be replaced.

There doesn't seem to be a stitch long enough on machine for basteing so I can gather material?

Try loosening both top and bottom tension. while longer stitches are easier, it can be done on shorter stitches as well. A bennifit to shorter stitches is the gathers will be smaller and easier to work with! Remember to reset the bobbin tension before sewing again.

The pattern (stitch) selector doesn't work when I turn it

it sounds like you need a new pattern selector dial & it wouldn't
hurt to have the machine checked to see if the internel part of the
dial is ok inside

When trying to change to the other sewing stitches the cams will not the the selector pass

doesn't sound like he tried real hard, my suggestion is to find a sewing machine shop that will take the machine apart & find out why the selector doesn't move, it's possibly a worn or loose or broken part, & the repair man is suppose to open the machine & find out what's wrong.

My top stitch is okay, however the stitiching on the bottom is wiggly, more like a zigzag stitch then a striaght stitch. Why?

try changing the needle--flat side to the back of machine
try adjusting the tension one number up--if it doesn't help put the tension back where it is
check to make sure the bobbin is in correctly
also check to make sure the bobbin is wound correctly
it's also possible that the machine is out of time which means a sewing machine repair shop would have to refix the timing of the machine, because they have the tools for the job

My Activa 130 makes a clacking sound when I sew. It is 10 years old. What do you think is wrong? Can I repair this or do I need to take it to be serviced?

I would take it to a Bernina repairman, nice machine and well worth getting it serviced by a qualified technician.

I presume that you've tried the obvious things like a new needle and checking the bobbin case is in correctly.
