If the top tension is on 5 put the tension on 4 and see if that helps
but bring the tension down one number at a time and then check
to see if the stitches are still tight

Are you inserting the needle fully into clamp? You may have a bad lot of needles that werent straight. Try sewing by hand with machine to see exactly where and when needle breaks, then you might be able to solve problem.
