Question about Acer Aspire M1100-U1402A Refurbished AMD Desktop PC - AMD Athlon X2 4400+ , 2GB DDR2, 320 SATA II, D

1 Answer

I am trying to install a wireless pci card onto my acer m1100 desktop. I've installed the software first (as suggested) and am now trying to install the actual pci in the slot, but am not sure which slot to do this in. I thought it was one of the 3 slots on the back of the unit, but when you take the cover off (also as suggested) it doesn't look like there's anything there that would connect it to the computer. Does it work just by inserting it into the slot?

On the back of your computer, there should be a bunch of covered slots. When you take off the cover of your computer, you should be able to unscrew these slot covers and remove them. Taking one off will give you a slot to install your wireless card. You will want the main plug part of the card to fit into one of the three large slots on your motherboard, and the side with the antenna will screw into the slot that you removed the cover for.

How do i enable wireless internet on a 2 year old HP desktop

You have to have a wireless card installed on the desktop. Either a PCI wireless card that will be installed inside the computer on one of the pci slots or you can use a usb wireless card that plugs into the usb port.

Unlike laptops, there will be no switch to turn on or off. The wireless on desktops is controlled by the software program that comes with the wireless adapter.

Try Tiger Direct at:

http://www.tigerdirect.com

When the site comes up just type: PCI Wireless Adapter or USB Wireless Adapter in the white search box at the top of the page and click GO.

Cant get wireless to work on acer aspire ax3400desktop

Is it set up to be wireless? Is there a wireless card installed inside the desktop or are you using a wireless device that you use in one of the usb ports? Do you have a wireless router? Now that we've covered the basic requirements let's see if we can find a solution. Most desktops don't come with the ability to connect wirelessly out of the box. Normally you have to installed a wirelesss device either by using a pci wireless adapter that you istall inside the computer or a usb type adapter that you plug into a usb port. No matter which type you use you should have been given a software disk that contains the driver and the utility that controls the wireless device. You can connect either using the wireless utility software that should be on your desktop or under your programs list. Or you can connect using windows (windows comes with the ability to connect wireless once an adapter is installed) zero config. Normally your wireless utility software will have an option to either let it control your wireless connection or to let windows control the connection. I would try both options if I were you. Make sure you can see your wireless router in the list of available wireless networks. Find your network and click Connect. If it requires a password it will prompt you for it. Now if you notice your connection just continously polling trying to connect that means you put the password in wrong. You will never connect if you don't put the password in exactly right.

I will be running openSuse11.3 on my laptop but I need the ability to use wireless. Currently running 11.3 on a desktop and am not able to get the wireless system working. I am lost. Thanks Bob

Well desktops don't typically have wireless cards so clearly it will not work on the desktop. Most flavors of Linux will work with no extra work once installed on a system. I've installed Ubuntu Linux on dozens of laptops without any problems. My advice is to just install it on the laptop.
If you have installed a wireless pci or usb card in the desktop you would probably want to check the manufacturer site to see if they have linux drivers available or use modprobe to extract them from the card.

Below you will find 2 options to add wireless connectivity to your desktop.
A. USB Wireless LAN
http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/category.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&category_id=6638&nf=44907%7e0%7e598274&sort=-ratingaverage&~ck=anav
This is the easiest solution to add a wireless connection. Simply connect the USB adapter, install the software it comes with and connect to the wifi signal, once configured.

B. PCI/PCI-e Hardware Wireless LAN

Adding a PCi/PCI-e expansion card requires opening your computer and manually installing the card, then installing the driver/software and configuring the wireless access. These cards typically offer faster speeds and stronger radios to communicate with wifi signals better.
NOTE: There are 2 types of wireless cards in the second link: PCI/PCI-e and Half-Card/Mini-Card. Half/Mini-Card adapters are for laptops only - they will not work on desktop computers!
Both USB or PCI/PCI-e offer excellent solutions to getting wireless access from your desktop. Furthermore, since it can be purchased through Dell.com, they can ship anywhere worldwide, so delivery to the Netherlands should not be a problem.
If you have any questions, you can always contact Dell's Customer Support by telephone and be sure to give them your service tag number, that will ensure that you get only the parts that match your desktop.

Hello,

One possiblilty is the VGA card may be bad. Try installing just the wireless card and booting your system, if it works install the VGA card. The other option, if you have not done so is to first install the software that came with each card and then install the hardware and reboot.

Can't download DVD DTV decoder for ATI wonder VE card.

ATI should give you the software in a zipped file as a free download. If they do, then save it to your desktop, and later, when you go to install it, unzip it to a file. It should install. Just choose the support and download section on the ATI site.

You dont have to remove the ethernet card, as i suspect it would be buit onto the motherboard in anycase. Just install the wireless card into a free pci slot.

PCI card

Hi,

Make sure you have any appropiate software installed and that you are using the correct wireless authentication method (WEP/WPA ect...)

Also check to make sure there is not IP Conflict between your PC and another wireless device on the network.

You can also try assiging your PC a IP Address to use within the gateway address, or set it to obtain it automatically.

exact instructions to do this all depend on your operating system and the wireless connection utility used.

Hope this helps
