Plasma TV has a black uneven splotch in the middle of the screen

I have a Samsung Plasma TV HP-R5012 that suddenly has had some really weird behavior. When you first turn on the TV you get a black screen. Over time the black fades and you can see the picture behind the black slowly start coming through. After about 30 minutes their is a black uneven splotch that covers the middle of the screen with the top and bottom showing thru. The picture that is showing thru is very dim and discolored

Thanks for the quick response to everyone. I failed to mention that I have had the Y-Sus board checked as well as the Y upper and lower buffer boards checked and they all tested fully functional. I have also replaced the Main board and am still having the same issue.

Hmmm. sounds like the screen might be damaged. You might have to get a new one. But before you do that I would try leaving it off for a while maybe a few hours or so and see if that helps.

I have this problem too. I have had a technician over to service it twice already and I picked up on a few things he did to fix it. Here is what I learned. the raining pixels has to do with the timing in the circuit boards. Basically telling them when to turn on and off. I would only recomend this solution if you are technically inclined. Remove the back from your tv on the left upper quadrant you should see a small gray dial with marks that a Philips screw driver would fit it. There are three or four of these on the boards scatter across the tv. Each on corresponds to the colors firing in sequence. Take your Philips and turn it to either extream. You should see a your screen go crazy with whatever color corresponds to the dial. Then ever so slowly turn the dial undtil you don't see any more flickering. Do that with each dial and you should be able to get rid of most of the flickering. on the right side of the there is a panel underneath the support bar with orange adjuster. I don't know what they do but they also help reduce the flickering. A word of caution. If you can use something non metallic to adjust these dials. There is a small metal lip to keep the dial from turning too far. If your screw driver touches it. It will fry the dial and your screen will blink red/yellow or blue. and you will have to buy a new board. Luckily they are only about 30 bucks, but I learned the hard way.

It sounds like an Intergrated Circuit (IC) has fried. Even on a good day, this is not something you can attack at home. As a tech (and as an owner of that model samsung), I'd need a map & tools to know what's going on. Your best bet in this situation is to contact Samsung and let them recommend an authorized service center in your area. Sorry I can't be of more help, but this is a rather serious problem.

The details you provided here is not enough to provide a solution to this problem. Check http://electronicshelponline.blogspot.com/ This link. Pull up older posts there. Defective screen shots to plasma TVs are given. Compare them with your TV, and try to understand the fault. Most plasma screens will have similar circuit configuration, irrespective of brands and models. The only difference will be the number of circuit boards it contains according to its screen size.

Hello,

All plasma an lcd TV have boards that control vertical and horizontal output to their respective areas. They are connected to the screen by ribbon cables. If one of these boards fails all together, has a failed chip, a bad connection, or a bad ground somewhere it will result in a black line in the area of that board. A bad ribbon cable connection on the bottom will result in a vertical black bar though the screen. Many times resetting the connection will fix it, if the ribbon cable has been nicked there could be a severed connection. They an sometimes be fixed, but it is a pain. An yes I have done it, but the bar is gone. The same will happen if the chip that outputs to that area opens. The connectors are the first place to look paying close attention to the cable, they are extremely delicate so great care must be taken if you decide to tinker with em, the usually have lift locks that release them, but it is very easy to wreck em.

Good luck.

Tv is about 4 years old. Suddenly developed two

Your plasma screen is made up of 1080 verticle lines and now a few of these lines are not working. This is the screen itself and needs replacing.

They didn't fix the issue this last time. The most common failure in these models is the upper and lower Y buffer boards. There are updated versions and both must be replaced as a pair. The part numbers are as follows: BN96-03361A for upper Y board and BN96-03362A for the lower Y board. Please take a few moments to rate my answer. Thanks...

Horizontal lines and colored snow

HI,
There are three likely causes for horizontal lines on your plasma TV.

1) A bad incoming signal. Do you see the lines on every channel, and from every source? If you play a DVD or videotape and the lines are still there, then that rules out your cable television or satellite box if you have one. However, if you find that the lines disappear when you play a DVD, I would contact the support desk for your cable or satellite provider.

2) A burn-in. This is caused by things like excessive use of video games or watching TV programs that have static (unchanging elements) like icons or scores or even lines. Have you tried using the built-in burn-in cleanup utility that is part of most Samsung plasma sets? Even if you suspect that the problem is not caused by burn-in i would recommend you try this just to see if it has an effect.

3) A problem with the electronics. Here you have to asnwer the following: is your set still under warranty? Most plasmas come with a one- or two-year warranty. If you paid for the set with certain types of credit cards, your warranty may be extended by a year or so: call your credit card.

If the set is still under warranty, immediately arrange for a repair and keep a record of all dates, names, phone numbers, and promises made. Don't accept any statement that five horizontal lines is "acceptable" to the maker; a pixel here or there may be excused but not a serious problem like yours.

Finally, if your set is NOT under warranty, consider carefully whether to make a repair or buy a new set. New set prices have dropped sharply, and the difference between a repair and a new set may not be significant. Of course, you can wait until the set fails.

thank you,
vijay
