My question is can a laptop that runs on a Pata hard drive be switched to a SATA or an SSD and if so How?

  • sgfd Oct 26, 2012

Oh sorry, I thought this was an Inspiron desktop. No, you can't use SATA drives in a laptop designed for PATA.

Well, you will want to open up the side of your computer and see if there are SATA ports on the motherboard. They look like this:

I have a Dell Inspiron 8600 which is running windo - 10_25_2012_6_50_53_pm.jpg
Though they may not be blue.

If there are SATA ports on your board, you are in good shape. Just buy any SATA hard drive (SATA2 and SATA3 are backwards compatible) and connect it with the SATA connector and a SATA power connector from the power supply. Don't be afraid, these can only plug in one way without forcing them and only SATA plugs will fit.

After that, there are a variety of drive cloning programs you can use to clone your current hard drive onto another so that you don't lose anything.

If you don't have SATA plugs on your motherboard, it is easily remedied. You can buy a PCI SATA card for quite a reasonable price like this one:

You will also probably need a small adapter like this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812189121
To convert a molex plug into a SATA power plug.

After you plug in the card and the new hard drive, run the driver CD for the SATA add-in card and then run a cloning program.

SOURCE: Dell Latitude D600 laptop Hard Drive replacement

The motherboard does not support SATA. If you want to use SATA, you'll have to use an adapter. Not sure if this is possible in your laptop. Also I don't think this increases performance very much.
So it's not gonna be a faster drive, but larger can...

hello bvanora,
Unfortunately it doesn't appear that your software is compatible with windows 7. Windows 7 does have a compatibility mode which is suppose to let the program run as it would in an older OS. However a little luck is needed, as well as the hardware requirements. such as windows 7 pro, and up. 2 Gigs of memory, and "cpu hardware virtualization support" (although there is a work around for virualization)
To try running your program in compatibility mode right click on the programs short cut, click properties, click on the compatibility tab, check "run this program in compatibility mode", click on the drop down menu and select windows xp, also click "run this program as administrator", and click ok.
If you get an error, along the lines of "Cannot start windows virtual pc" follow the link provided, and download the appropriate update for your computer 32/64 bit. This is the work around i mentioned for virtualization support. So as long as you have win 7 professional or higher, as well as 2 gigs of memory you should be able to run your program.
Good luck

Windows XP won't boot with "CREATIVE SOLUTIONS" PC

That machine is too underpowared to run xp pro.
Windows XP Media Center Edition
1.6 GHz CPU, 256MB Ram, and DirectX 9 hardware-accelerated GPU
you may get it to run but it is going to be dead slow. you will be waiting forever to load any apps with a processor under a gig, and less than 512 mhz of memory, it may work for emulation, but that's even questionable. I don't want to aggrvate you but that config is a decade old. Vista for instance needs at least 2 gigs of ram and a dualcore to run right. sorry bud, if you are dead set on it, the only thing you coula do is juice up the memory, to whatever the board is rated to take, or I would run windows 98, peace
