What advantages and disadvantages does a kerosene stove have

Kerosene may be hard to get these days, and I think it will be harder to light than a white-gas stove.
Some people say it can give off an oily smell and they even taste it, although there are probable modern stoves that do not do this.
If you are travelling in some 3rd world areas, kerosene may be the only fuel available.

I'm traveling to South America and I will be camping there a lot. Can I bring a liquid fuel stove on the plane?

You can put a stove with an empty fuel bottle in your luggage that will go in your checked luggage (under the plane, not the carry-on luggage). However, if there's gas or any fuel in the bottle, there is no way they will let you bring it on the plane. So just make sure it is clean and free of any gas or fuel.

3 of 4 knobs do not compress to turn on gas

You must replace those controls. Cleaning or loosening them up would be temporary at best and the next time they stick it could be in the open position. Safety first...Eric
