Cleaning a Steam Iron Soleplate

During the day to day use of a steam iron there can be normal buildup accumulate on the soleplate of the iron. Other things such as melted synthetic fibers, iron-on trims, and fusibles can also buildup on the sole plate of the iron. These can be removed with the use of a quality hot soleplate cleaner. Soleplate Cleaning Kits can be purchased from many service centers or can be found online by doing a search for “soleplate cleaning kit”.

If you have had the misfortune of getting melted plastic on the soleplate of your iron, you can remove that by taking a piece of Aluminum foil and sprinkling it with salt. Then take the hot iron and work it back and forth over the salt to break up the plastic and remove it from the bottom of the iron.

Avoid starches and be careful of synthetic materials. Also avoid zippers and buttons that can scratch the bottom of your iron.

Do not use the soleplate cleaners on your iron if it has a non-stick surface. With the non-stick surface you should not need the cleaning anyway. These surfaces can be damaged easily by anything abrasive. Do not use abrasive cleaners on any soleplate. Use the soleplate cleaning kit.

The holes in the bottom of our iron can be cleaned by using a pipe cleaner of a Q-tip.
Simply make sure the bottom is cool and then insert the pipe cleaner or Q-tip into the holes one by one and circle them around inside to clean out the hole.

If your iron has a “self clean” feature, do not over use it. It is recommended that you use it at least once per year, but not more then once per month.

follow this steps and fix it. God bless you
Service the steam and spray mechanism:
  1. Unplug the iron.
  2. Use a fine sewing needle to unclog the steam valve assembly. Also, check the valve spring and replace it if it is broken or has lost tension.
  3. If the spray pump is accessible, remove it and check for leaks by placing the spray tube in water and squirting the pump. Clean or replace as needed.
Clean a metal soleplate:
  1. Unplug the iron.
  2. Use a sponge and commercial soleplate cleaner or baking soda and water to remove dirt buildup on the soleplate. Rinse well with water and dry. Don't use harsh abrasives or immerse an electric iron in water.
  3. Use very fine steel wool (0000) or an emery cloth to remove scratches and burns on the soleplate, then clean the soleplate.

Singer 7467 wheel won't spin, unless little bit if I do manualy by hand...

do this

If the iron heats but steams improperly, inspect the soleplate and clean the vents (see below) and flush sediment out of the steam chamber (see below).
If the iron produces too much or too little heat, test the electrical cord . Also test and, if needed, adjust calibration of the thermostat
If the iron does not spray properly, inspect and clean the nozzle (see below).
If the iron leaks or spits, clean the steam vents, nozzle, and tank.
If the iron sticks to fabric, clean or repair the soleplate. If the iron stains fabric, clean the soleplate, clean the tank with a commercial cleaner, and use distilled or filtered water.2_1_2013_6_01_09_pm.jpg

For my singer electronic steam press esp2 can i use deironise water instead of distilled as i can not get any distilled water in any of the shops in my area.

Hi,
You can try the deionized water but you may have trouble with it producing enough steam...water that is too pure may not produce steam well depending on the way it is heated.
If it does not produce enough steam just add a bit of salt to the water and it will work well.

How do you clean the soleplate? I have some residue/buildup that does not wipe off. I already did the self-clean to remove deposits but there is still "stuff" on the soleplate

You can use Rowenta Sole plate Cleaner. If you cannot find it locally, check online at retail sites like Amazon.
If you want to try a home made cleaner, Avoid abrasive cleaning powders or scouring pads.

Begin with a cold iron that is unplugged from the electrical outlet. Use a mild dish washing soap or laundry detergent to create a sudsy solution. Use a nylon mesh pad, sponge, or a clean cloth dipped in the solution to completely wipe off the soleplate of the iron. Wipe the soleplate clean with a damp cloth or rag.

If the soleplate is the victim of a starchy build up or corrosion of some form, you will need to use something a little stronger. Use a clean cloth dipped in white vinegar to remove the build up. Wipe the soleplate clean with a cloth dampened in clean water.

If this does not work, then you will need to heat a solution of white vinegar and salt until the salt dissolves. Using a clean cloth sipped in the heated solution, wipe the iron's soleplate clean. Continue wiping until you have removed all of the build up or corrosion. Remember to wipe the iron completely clean with a cloth dampened in clean water.

Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks.
