In order to keep your dog's house cool during hot summer days, consider to do the following:

  • Place the dog house in the shade so it doesn't get too hot from the sun.
  • Make sure that the house is ventilated so warm air can come out.
  • If it gets really hot inside the house, you should put a fan to cool the house down or buy a small air conditioning unit made for dog houses.
  • Place a cooling mat on the ground of the house. This will help the dog to cool down during the hot summer days.

Do chickens build nests

No they do not. They will however find dirt areas and scratch around to kind of dog a hole to lay in to stay cool in the summer or move draw arou d to stay warm in winter. It may look similar to a nest, but it is not a nest, more like a relaxing spot for them.

Does my dog need to wear shoes in the summer?

I know I wouldn't want to walk around barefoot in the middle of August. I'm sure your dog would appreciate a barrier between his paws and the hot pavement.

If I don't heat or cool down my dog house with an air conditioning unit, is it dangerous for my dog?

Obviously it depends how extreme the temperatures are where you live, but in general when dogs seriously overheat, they are at risk of a stroke and when they get dangerously cold, they are at risk of hypothermia and frostbite.

Where can I get an air conditioner for my dog house?

You can buy portable units for dog houses, which is really sensible as that way you can keep using it even if you switch to a new dog house. Here's a link to a site that specializes in air conditioning units to keep your dog cool and healthy. http://www.climaterightair.com/outdoor-pet-house-heating-and-air-conditioning

Do I need to put air conditioning in my dog house? It seems kind of extravagant.

It depends where you live, but if you live in a hot climate and suffer from the heat yourself (and use air con to cool yourself down), the chances are that your dog is suffering too. The dog house provides some shade but it doesn't help humidity and really hot temperatures.
