Question about Washing Machines
IF THIS MIGHT HELP LEMME KNOW This sounds potentially ominous as it could be that the inner drum is catching on the inside of the outer tub which is often covered in gunge. As clothes are pushed through the holes in the drum on spin, this could cause them to scrape on the inner tub and pick up greasy marks. Check for play in the drum by lifting it up and down from the front. It should only lift up a mm or so. Then turn the drum so that one of the drum paddles is at the bottom. Pull the drum toward you at the point of the drum paddle. It shouldn't have any play in it. Turn the drum round and test the other two as well. If the drum spider and shaft has a crack in it then one or more of the arms will allow excess play when you pull the drum at the paddle points.
Carbon dust from a motor could never get onto clothes.

Your bearings are almost certainly gone which would explain the noise not an easy job or cheap . Normally it would consist of a tub change or at best a bearing hub . As for the clicking round of the selector Iwould suggest poss the heater or brush fault. As ofr price you'd have to ask your local repair man. Worst case sinario approx £200 .00

This problem, or some variation thereof evidently is very common with these Whirlpool Washers! I have same problem. So far, best I have found is at
diagnosis by someone who knows. What William Burk says there makes sense. However, to get to the drive block there's quite a bit of disassembly required. I am stopped because I cannot get the spanner nut off. Hope this gives you some help toward finding a more comprehensive answer

Check the water pump for an obstruction in the chamber area, your pump may be sticking and that will cause the buzzing sound. The water pump runs during the fill portion of the cycle on several of the selected wash cycles to recirculate the water.

There are a few things that can go wrong, If the washer doesn't adgitate or spin then probably the coupler is broken, lean the washer back and look under the machine between the motor and transmission you will find the coupler. (very common)
Coupler Part# 285753A $22.95
If its agitating but not spinning, check the lid switch, (easy check just listen for the click when you shut the lid, Or you can bypass it with a jumper wire under the console there are only 2 screw that hold the console down they are philips and either located in the front lower corners or the back lower corners)
Lid switch Part# 3949247 $42.95
If lid switch is good and the motor still doesnt run you might have a bad timer (RARE)
Timer Part# 3954563 $95.95
If you can hear the motor running but its not spinning and you have rulled out the coupler then your probably looking at a clutch (common problem) either the clutch isnt grabbing or the brake isnt releasing both problems solved with the clutch kit
Clutch kit Part# 285785 $44.95
Worst case your looking at a transmission, (uncommon) to rule out, make sure its agitating, then put washer in spin cycle. look under the washer to see if the clutch bell is spinning. if its not then you will need a transmission.
Trans Part# 3360629 $172.95
if its making loud noises when it stops spinnig then the block is bad.
Block Part# 389140 $14.95

The two dampers that fix to the outer drum casing have plastic bushes that can fall out. Check the floor under the machine, They are easy to replace just click in place.
