Whirlpool gas range

Nothing Works, or the Oven / Range / Stovetop Works Only At Certain Times:

1.Home breaker flipped or the fuse blown?Possibly an electrical surge has flipped the breaker. Check your breaker or fuse box and replace or reset as necessary.
2.Power cord plugged in?Grab the plug and wiggle to determine a good connection.
3.Power cord damage?Damaged rubber with wires showing through or the wire is being pinched can cause issues. Electrical tape is acceptable for covering damaged wires.
4.Aclicking sound could be something wrong with a relay. Check for any loose connections around the main control board on your oven. The click you hear is a relay losing power and switching back on. If the clock resets then something is causing power interruptions to the board.

If your oven has internal fuses, a wiring or component problem could have caused a fuse to blow. A blown fuse is an indication that a component has shorted or failed, and the problem will need to be corrected. Most ovens that use fuses will have an indication of the circuits that are affected by a particular fuse. If an oven fuse has blown, then you should inspect the oven element and the associated wiring to determine the cause before replacing the fuse.

THINGS TO CHECK:

The oven safety valve
(also called the gas valve) is the part that ensures that gas is not released until the igniter has reached the correct temperature needed to ignite the gas. While this part can fail, it is uncommon. If the hot surface igniter does not glow you should first verify that you have voltage to the circuit. This is a live voltage check and should be performed by a qualified person. If voltage is lost at the valve terminals then you should verify the continuity of the bi-metal in the valve using a multi-meter.

The oven burner igniter
commonly known as the hot surface igniter is used in modern gas oven burners to open the gas valve and to ignite the gas. As the igniter draws electric current it will heat to a high temperature and glow, as well as cause the bi-metal in the oven safety valve to warp and open the valve releasing the gas to be ignited. This sequence normally takes about a minute. Igniters come in both flat and round styles and are very fragile. If the burner does not light then you should check the igniter first. If the igniter does not glow at all, then check for power to the circuit. This is a live voltage check and should be performed by a qualified person. If power is present then the igniter may be open circuit and can be checked for continuity with a multi-meter. If the igniter is glowing, but the burner is not lighting, the igniter may be weak and still be at fault because it requires a certain amount of current draw to open the valve. This check requires the use of an amp meter and should be performed by a qualified person. If the igniter is defective then it must be replaced.

Oven Hot Surface Indicator Light stays on

There have been many questions concerning the failure of the hot surface indicator lights on electric cooktops and stoves and ranges. It seems as though they like to stay on and not shut off. So I did some research and will combine that with my experience to give you an explanation of what has happened and what you will need to do to correct the problem.

The first thing to remember is that on some cook tops the indicator light will come on when power is first applied. The light may stay on for 30-40 minutes in some cases.

Do not be alarmed by this, it is just a way of showing that the light does indeed work.

Now for lights that seems to be a problem and do not shut off. Give any indicator light at least two hours of cooling time before getting alarmed. If it is very warm in the house or kitchen the time may be longer. If you have an electric stove over an oven and you are using the oven then the times can be even longer. The heat underneath will prolong the cooling of the burner. Likewise in the summertime the time it takes to shut off will be much longer then in the wintertime, especially if your house does not have air conditioning.

The indicator light is controlled by a heat sensor either attached to, or near the burner. In some cases the sensor can be replaced separately and on other units the sensor is attached and part of the burner assembly and therefore the whole burner will have to be replaced to correct the problem.

Finally there are a couple of different ways that the indicator lights operate. On some ranges there is one light for all the burners. If this is the case then the sensor wires will need to be unhooked one by one to find exactly which burner is causing the false reading.

One other stoves each burner has an individual indicator light and so it is easy to see where the problem is.

Appliance parts can be purchased online easily but the replacement of these parts is not always easy and it can take quite a bit of experience to know how to replace these parts safely and efficiently. These types of repairs are often not something that the average homeowner wants to try to do.

Burners and oven on Hotpoint free standing electric stove won't heat at all.

Find someone with a good electrical meter and have them test the sockets to see if there is any electricity to the burners.
Also, check each burner and check for continuity through the burner itself.
These elements can all burn out, I've see it happen.
Be blesssed.

I have an old double oven white -westinghouse stove and while i was at work the fuse blew in the basment. well i have reset it but now everything works but my stove. well my oven light will not come on...

Hi, sounds like your oven is a 240 volt electric.  One of your fuses is still blown. 240 volts requires 2 hot legs and obviously you have only one. When you turn on a burner, it completes the circuit to your light. Bottom line, you only have 120 volts to your oven, check the breakers or fuses. Good luck!

Heating elements

I have a Whirlpool super capacity 465, the surface light for the burners comes on, the burners don't heat up, nor does the oven,(the light that says oven is on does not light up). I checked the main circuit breaker, that works. Are there any fuses in the range that would need to be replaced?

Thank-You,maddie

Neither the stove top nor the oven get hot!

Hi and welcome to FixYa.com

First thing you want to check is the power supply (fuse or circuit breaker) to your oven.
Now, before you say "RescueTech it can't be the fuse because the indicators light up and I can set the controls!" read on-
Your range and oven elements are 220V units. This requires both legs of the 220 (L1 and L2) in order for them to heat up. Your indicator lamps and controls are 120V, therefore they will continue to work if one leg of the 220V feed is not present. It is very unlikely that all your switches and elements have failed at once. So start first at your fuse or breaker box. If you have cartridge fuses, you need an continuity tester or ohmmeter to check them. If you have breakers, there are two styles- One is a "single lever" style that controls both legs of the supply. The other style is a "double pole" breaker that is actually two separate breakers connected by a pin between them. Oftentimes one side will trip but not the other. You will actually be able to visually see this as the pin will appear crooked as one breaker is in the ON position and the other is in the TRIPPED position. Turn off the breaker (both sides will move together) and then reset it to the ON position. Now the pin should appear straight and both breakers should be in the ON position.

If the breaker seems to be fine, the next thing I would check is the terminal block where the range cord is connected to the appliance. As a journeyman technician, I often see where the installer failed to properly tighten the range cord's terminals when he/she installed the range cord. The appliance will function for awhile, sometimes for a few years even, but that connection gets HOT every time the range is used, and especially when the oven and all 4 burners are used together (Like on a HOLIDAY!) What will eventually happen is that the terminal will literally burn away and break the connection to one side of the 220. The result is anything "low voltage" on the appliance such as clock, lights, timers, indicators) will still work, however the elements will not heat up.

Before you start changing parts, check these things. I would be very curious to know how this one turns out. Just remember that the top burners and the oven have no connection to one another other than the supply voltage.

I hope this helps and have a happy and safe New Year from all of of here at FixYa!!

Frigidaire Stove elements not working

First thing I would check is see if you are getting 220 volts to the stove.  Must be a constant 220.  Let me know what you find.
