This is a limitation of Windows 98.
You will need to upgrade to Windows XP for the password function to lock someone out of a profile.

The password function in Win98 is not meant to do that. Sorry.

Bought from someone else need to put my nane on it

You have to make 2 changes, One for the computer and one for the user. Here is how you do both:
CHANGE COMPUTER NAME:
  1. Right click my computer and select properties
  2. Select "Advanced System Settings" (skip if win xp)
  3. Select "Computer Name" tab
  4. click "change"
  5. Enter the name of your choice
CHANGE USER NAME:
You cannot change a user account by just changing the name. Just changing the name will make a cosmetic change only and not affect the underlying files/folders in the profile.

1. From an account with administrative privileges, go to Control Panel>User Accounts and create the new Standard user account named the way you want and at least one extra Administrator account. Call the latter "CompAdmin" or "Tech" or the like.
2. Log into the new Standard user account once so the profile files/folders are created and then log into CompAdmin.
3. Now go to Control Panel>System>Advanced>User Profiles>Settings
4. You will see where you can copy user accounts. Copy the old account to the new one from there. Use the Browse to select your new account (C:\Users\newaccount).
5. Log into the new correctly named account and make sure all your stuff is there and that it works the way you want. When you are satisfied, you can log out and into CompAdmin and delete the old user account from Control Panel>User Accounts.

If you wish to log into your new, corrected account automatically, do this:Start Orb>Search box>type: netplwiz [enter]
Click on Continue (or supply an administrator's password) when prompted by UAC

Uncheck the option "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer". Select a user account to automatically log on by clicking on the desired account to highlight it and then hit OK. Enter the correct password for that user account (if there is one) when prompted. Leave it blank if there is no password (null).

How To Change Password Of Users In Windows XP

On Internet, I found so many people are confused about how to change the passwords of users in Windows XP even though it is a easy job. As far as we know, changing logon password of our Windows regularly is a good habit to help keep our PC secure, I just researched and found out the below ways to change the password of users in Windows XP. You can use either one to achieve your goal.
Follow the simplest ways you thought to change your Windows XP logon password:
If you know any other interesting way, please let me know through comments.
Using Control Panel
Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: Changing your Windows XP logon password usually takes less than a few minutes
Here’s How:
go to Start –> Control Panel –> User Accounts
Tip: You can also open control panel by Start –> Run –> control. This will open Control Panel.
Select the user for which you want to change the password and select Change my password.
f738378.png
Note: you must need appropriate privileges to change the password of another user.
Using Ctrl+Alt+Delete
Difficulty: The easiest one in my opinion
Time Required: It just takes me one minute
Here’s How:
If your press Ctrl+Alt+Del when you are logged onto your Windows XP machine, it will show you the classic security options.
ff0dc31.jpg
Select change password and change the password of the logged on user.
Note: If the security options does not appear. Task manager shows up instead of the security options. Just go to Start –> Control Panel –> User Accounts –> Change the way Users Log on or off.
Uncheck Use the Welcome Screen. Log off and logon again. Now pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del will show the security options window.
Using Command Prompt
Difficulty: medium
Time Required: It may takes a few minutes
Here’s How:
go to Run –> cmd.
Command prompt will open. Use the following commands to change the password:
net user username password /domain
Replace username with the original username and password with the new password you want to assign to that user. /domain is optional. If you are in a domain environment, specify the domain name otherwise, if you’re using a local user, leave /domain. If I want to change the password of user Sanix to 12345. I will issue the following command at command prompt:
net user Sanix 12345
It will change the password of the user Sanix to 12345.
9b1a7e6.jpg
Note: if you’re not logged on as an administrator, you will get the following error:
“System error 5 has occurred. Access is denied”
Using Control userpasswords2
Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: It may takes less than a few minutes
Here’s How:
go to Start –> Run –> control userpasswords2
This will open the classic user accounts management window. Select any user and select reset password.
29fabc8.jpg

Using Computer Management Console
Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: It may takes a few minutes
Here’s How:
right click My Computer –> Manage –> Local Users And Groups –> Users
Right click the username for which you want to change the password and select Reset Password.
26e4e36.jpg
If you compare the ways hereinabove carefully .You’ll find that the premise of using above ways to change your PC users password is you must logon the system with a user who has the appropriate privileges to change the password of another user. But if you forget any user password including administrator, what can you do?
Tips:
Windows Password Recovery 6.0 is your best choice, it is an easy-to-use tool designed for resetting local administrator and user passwords on any Windows system. If you have forgotten your password , or are locked out, or you do not have access to the password of the system. How do i unlock a compaq

When you boot up to the log in screen type in administrator as user to log in if you cant log in

Restart your computer during the boot up process you will see on the screen for a short amount of time press a certain key to enter set up press and hold that key during the boot up process to enter BIOS scroll down to set user password or supervisor password you can change or remove your password from there

if this fails to remove your password

The most common way that we know on how to reset or clear the BIOS password is to physically remove the power from the computer by disconnecting the power plug and then removing the Cmos battery for 30 minutes from the motherboard. Another way is to reset the clear CMOS jumper on the motherboard itself. Both of the 2 methods mentioned works because most motherboards use a battery to sustain the BIOS/CMOS settings for the motherboards PROM chip. So by cutting off cmos the battery power, the BIOS/CMOS settings will be erased.

click start control panel Open User Accounts in Control Panel. On the Users tab, click the name of the user whose password you want to change, and then click Reset Password. In New password and Confirm new password, type the new password, and then click OK. Notes You can change passwords only for local computer accounts, such as guest, administrator, or accounts you create for your computer. You cannot change your network logon password in User Accounts. To change your own password, press CTRL ALT DELETE and then click Change Password
also
if you are not the computer administrator and have not assigned a bios password during the boot up process you will see on the screen for a short amount of time press a certain key to enter set up Press and hold that key during the boot up process to enter BIOS scroll down to set user password or supervisor password you can change or remove your password from there also click start control panel user accounts on the users tab, click the name of the computer administrator you must have full control can change the password there

hope this helps you

My laptop has a password and i typed in the password that it should bet yet it isnt working, as soon as i turn the computer on it comes to a screen saying enter passowrd. My laptop is an acer travelmate...

Is this computer a member of a domain or just local?
If a domain member, contact your administrator to reset the password for you.

If local (or in a workgroup)
Log in as a local administrator, then you may be able to reset your password.

When logging in, type, Administrator as the user name and type in your password (if you remember). Try password as blank first if you haven't set a password. Default password is usually 12345

Once logged in:

Click Start, right-click My Computer, select Manage.
Under Computer Management --> Expand System Tools --> Local Users and Groups, the select Users folder.

Locate your user name on the right pane, right-click on your username, then select Set Password. Change your password.

Pls let me know if this solution worked for you.
