Question about IBM ThinkPad G41 Notebook

1 Answer

System Board Part Number Location

I am tring to locate the system board P/N for my IBM Thinkpad G41 Notebook. I've looked along the topside edge and the bottomside edge but have not yet found it. The only identifier clearly noted in large print on the board (and not on the edge) is DAOBF4MB6D2 REV:D any suggestions?

I have Thinkpad 2886-XX1. I followed your link, but here's the rub....
the system board part #'s listed don't match what I finally found FRU 27R1870. I searched the web with that system board # and found some matches from various vendors. Maybe there was an engineering change which never got recorded in the IBM/Lenovo manuals. I've found prices ranging from $115 to $235 for the board. Should I expect the board to be populated with relevant ports and modem card (not RAM or CPU) or would it be "bare bones".
    Thanks, Dave

Here is the service manual. On page 145 in the reader (141 in the actual manual) you will see the part numbers(FRU) for your system board. You will have to look on the bottom of your laptop and note which Machine type you have. It will be a # like 28xx-7xx
(not necessarily these numbers)

3 series of 4 beeps on ibm thinkpad t41

The closest diagnostic code that matches what you're saying is the 4 (continuous beeping). This is a video module failure or system board failure. The T41 does not have a separate video module which indicates system board failure.
If you can locate a T41 with a good system board on eBay for less than $50 then you could attempt a repair on the system. Otherwise the system is dead and its cost is greater than its value.

IBM r41 thinkpad makes one long beep and two short beeps when starting but the computer then stops and only the power light and the light to the left stay on

There seems to be a slight problem here as there is no R 41. There is a G41 and a T41. They both have the same beep code and symptom. One long and two short is:
1. System board
2. LCD assembly
3. Dimm

If you copy and paste this link it will take you to the support page for think pads. Use the complete model number on the bottom of your machine and select users guides and manuals and you'll be able to download a copy of the HMM (hardware maintenance manual) used by IBM techs.

Graphics cards on laptops cannot be changed or upgraded. In order to do this, I believe you have to change out the screen, because graphics cards in laptops are within the screens.
