i tried to connect my external harddrive to my mac but when it turns on it just makes sounds and does not mount to my laptop. I think one time i left it connected for a long time and it actually did mount but then i was not able to drag any folders out of it because after clicking on icon it would freeze my laptop. will i have to send it to recovery specialists?
Sorry to be the one bringing you the bad news but any sound from a hard drive is an indication of mechanical problem, often the head hitting the stops or bouncing off the platters.
Of course the recovery specialists would be a good idea. However, you may want to get a quote first and time required for the recovery. In some instances, the cost/time would no longer justify the recovery as an economical option.
Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

The power light comes on but does not flash anymore and no PC's detect that it is plugged in. Have tried it on different laptops and in different USB sockets but all the same. There is some vibration inside the external hard drive, so it is not completely dead. I wiggled the cable and it started to flash but stopped and cannot get it to do it again. Is it possible that the cable has become faulty? Iomega eGo Portable Designed for Dell - Hard drive - 250 GB - external - 2.5" - Hi-Speed USB - 5400 rpm - buffer: 8 MB
