Some webcams require you to install their software, visit their website and look for their software or if you have the disc. If it's already on there try reinstalling it.

How can I get my webcam working on HP laptop

if you have driver no problem IF not go webside HP download web cam driver >model no

1. Downloaded the file.
2. Unzipped it to a folder on my desktop.
3. Ran the "Setup.exe" file in the folder that got unzipped.
4. Went through the installer until it got to the end and then let it restart my computer.
5. Waited for my computer to restart.
6. It popped up something saying it was installing the drivers for my webcam. Waited until it was done.
7. Opened the Control Panel.
8. Opened the Device Manager.
9. Find my webcam under "Imaging Devices". I noticed it was listed as "HP Pavilion Webcam" despite having just installed the Acer drivers.
10. Right-clicked on my webcam and chose "Update Driver Software..."
11. Chose "Browse my computer for driver software"
12. Chose "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer"
13. Unchecked the "Show compatible hardware" checkbox.
14. Scrolled down to the Chicony manufacturer.
15. Chose the "Acer Crystal Eye webcam.
16. Told it to install anyway when it asked me a question about installing that driver.
17. Waited for the driver to be installed.
18. Noted that my webcam was now listed as an Acer Crystal Eye webcam in Device Manager.

And that was it. It appears to work totally fine now! Again, I have my fingers crossed that it won't suddenly break again, but so far so good.

Forgot to note: This is on a DV6000T running Windows Vista 32-Bit Home Premium.

I cant find the icon for the webcam on my averatec D1002UHCE-1 Al

You'll survive this one, I daresay.
How's it going as far as the USB plug?  Maybe the power fell out of the USB hub or the webcam and you get to reconnect that as well as the USB connection?  If things aren't perfect then, try going into control panels and seeing if the OS lists the webcam among the A/V devices.

Sometimes USB ports go bad, sometimes the power thing falls out and throws me for a loop, sometimes it's just a virus and you need to stop deferring the antivirus scans and such (or run one; just pick a trusted source, or for example refer to articles etc. at theregister.co.uk or MaximumPC.com)  so your system can heal up and recognize the USB ports the virus was thinking of commandeering.  Sorry about that run-on sentence.

Webcam not recognized

Ok, since I figured it out I will answer my own question for others' sake.

Webcam does not show up under "imaging device" in the device manager.

It does show up under USB controllers.

Right click on webcam and update driver.

Click Browse my computer....
Click Let me pick from a list....
Select "USB Composite Device"

Voila. Works in Quickplay, Skype, etc.

Webcam in use by another program?

Thunderbird is an email client, but I'll take that as a no.

Download this:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx

Click the Find menu, then Find handle or dll and search for the executable file (.exe) of the webcam. It will show you if there is another program using the webcam. Thunderbird likes to take over webcam's for some reason, which is why i was asking. If you need help with this, you can question me directly and we can set up a time for me to remote to you and look.
